Practical Atheism exposed; or, The Being and Attributes of God asserted

Appears in 25 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 36:1-2 First Line: While men grow bold in wicked ways Lyrics: 1 While men grow bold in wicked ways, And yet a God they own, My heart within me often says, "Their thoughts believe there's none." 2 Their thoughts and ways at once declare (What e'er their lips profess) God hath no wrath for them to fear, Nor will they seek his grace. 3 What strange self-flatt'ry blinds their eyes! But there's a hast'ning hour, When they shall see, with sore surprise The terrors of thy pow'r. 4 Thy justice shall maintain its throne, Though mountains melt away; Thy judgments are a world unknown, A deep, unfathom'd sea. 5 Above the heav'ns created rounds Thy mercies, Lord, extend; Thy truth out-lives the narrow bounds, Where time and nature end. 6 Safety to man thy goodness brings, Nor overlooks the beast; Beneath the shadow of thy wings Thy children chuse to rest. 7 [From thee, when creature-streams run low. And mortal comforts die, Perpetual springs of life shall flow, And raise our pleasures high. 8 Though all created light decay, And death close up our eyes, Thy presence makes eternal day, Where clouds can never rise.]

Psalm 36

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 379 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 36:5-9 First Line: High in the heav'ns, eternal God Lyrics: High in the heav'ns, eternal God, Thy goodness in full glory shines Thy truth shall break through every cloud That veils and darkens thy designs. For ever firm thy justice stands, As mountains their foundations keep; Wise are the wonders of thy hands; Thy judgments are a mighty deep. Thy providence is kind and large, Both man and beast thy bounty share; The whole creation is thy charge, But saints are thy peculiar care. My God! how excellent thy grace, Whence all our hope and comfort springs! The sons of Adam in distress Fly to the shadow of thy wings. From the provisions of thy house We shall be fed with sweet repast; There mercy like a river flows, And brings salvation to our taste. Life, like a fountain rich and free, Springs from the presence of the Lord; And in thy light our souls shall see The glories promised in thy word. Psalm 36

Appears in 5 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 36 First Line: The wicked man's transgression Lyrics: 1 The wicked man's transgrëssion within my heart thus says, Undoubtedly the fear of God is not before his eyes. 2 Because himself he flattereth in his own blinded eye, Until the hatefulness be found of his iniquity. 3 Words from his mouth proceeding are, fraud and iniquity: He to be wise, and to do good, hath left off utterly. 4 He mischief, lying on his bed, most cunningly doth plot: He sets himself in ways not good, ill he abhorreth not. 5 Thy mercy, Lord, is in the heav'ns; thy truth doth reach the clouds: 6 Thy justice is like mountains great; thy judgments deep as floods: Lord, thou preservest man and beast. 7 How precious is thy grace! Therefore in shadow of thy wings men's sons their trust shall place. 8 They with the fatness of thy house shall be well satisfied; From rivers of thy pleasures thou wilt drink to them provide. 9 Because of life the fountain pure remains alone with thee; And in that purest light of thine we clearly light shall see. 10 Thy loving-kindness unto them continue that thee know; And still on men upright in heart thy righteousness bestow. 11 Let not the foot of cruel pride come, and against me stand; And let me not removèd be, Lord, by the wicked's hand. 12 There fall'n are they, and ruinèd, that work iniquities: Cast down they are, and never shall be able to arise.

Psalm 91

Author: James Montgomery Appears in 214 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 36:7 First Line: Call Jehovah thy salvation Lyrics: 1 Call Jehovah thy salvation, Rest beneath the Almighty's shade; In his secret habitation Dwell, and never be dismayed: There no tumult can alarm thee, Thou shalt dread no hidden snare; Guile nor violence can harm thee, In eternal safeguard there. 2 From the sword, at noon-day wasting, From the noisome pestilence; In the depth of midnight, blasting, God shall be thy sure defence: Fear not thou the deadly quiver, When a thousand feel the blow; Mercy shall thy soul deliver, Though ten thousand be laid low. 3 Since, with pure and firm affection, Thou on God hast set thy love, With the wings of his protection, He will shield thee from above; Thou shalt call on him in trouble, He will hearken, he will save; Here, for grief reward thee double, Crown with life beyond the grave. [He walks awhile concealed In a self-flatt'ring dream, Till his dark crimes at once revealed Expose his hateful name.] His heart is false and foul, His words are smooth and fair; Wisdom is banished from his soul, And leaves no goodness there. He plots upon his bed New mischiefs to fulfil He sets his heart, and hand, and head, To practise all that's ill. But there's a dreadful God, Though men renounce his fear; His justice, hid behind the cloud, Shall one great day appear. His truth transcends the sky, In heav'n his mercies dwell; Deep as the sea his judgments lie, His anger burns to hell. How excellent his love, Whence all our safety springs!
