Why should the mighty make their boast

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 25 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 52 Lyrics: 1 Why should the mighty make their boast, And heav'nly grace despise? In their own arm they put their trust, And fill their mouth with lies. 2 But God in vengeance shall destroy, And drive them from his face; No more shall they his church annoy, Nor find on earth a place. 3 But like a cultur'd olive grow, Drest in immortal green, Thy children blooming in thy love, Amid thy courts are seen. 4 On thine eternal grace, O Lord, Thy saints shall rest secure, And all who trust thy holy word, Shall find salvation sure. The Folly of Self-Dependance

Appears in 15 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 52 First Line: Why should the haughty hero boast Lyrics: 1 Why should the haughty hero boast His vengeful arm, his warlike host? While blood defiles his cruel hand, And desolation wastes the land. 2 He joys to hear the captive's cry, The widow's groan, the orphan's sigh; And when the weary'd sword would spare, His falsehood spreads the fatal snare. 3 He triumphs in the deeds of wrong, And arms with rage his impious tongue; With pride proclaims his dreadful pow'r, And b ids the trembling world adore. 4 But God beholds, and with a frown, Casts to the dust his honours down; The righteous freed, their hopes recal, And hail the proud oppressor's fall. 5 How low the insulting tyrant lies, Who dar'd th' eternal Pow'r despise; And vainly deem'd with envious joy, His arm Almighty to destroy. 6 We praise the Lord, who heard our cries, And sent salvation from the skies; The saints, who saw our mournful days, Shall join our grateful songs of praise.

In vain, O Man of lawless Might

Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 52 Lyrics: 1 In vain, O Man of lawless Might, thou boast'st thyself in Ill; Since God, the God in whom I trust, vouchsafes His Favour still. 2 Thy wicked Tongue does sland'rous Tales maliciously devise; And, sharper than a Razor set, it wounds with treach'rous Lyes. 3,4 Thy Thoughts are more on Ill, than Good, on Lyes, than Truth, employ'd; Thy Tongue delights in words by which the Guiltless are destroy'd. 5 God shall for ever blast thy Hopes, and snatch thee soon away; Nor in thy Dwelling-place permit, nor in the World, to stay. 6 The Just, with pious Fear, shall see the Downfal of thy Pride; And at thy sudden ruin laugh, and thus thy Fall deride: 7 "See there the Man that haughty was, "who proudly God defy'd, "who trusted in his Wealth, and still "on wicked Arts rely'd." 8 But I am like those Olive-plants that shade God's Temple round; And hope with His indulgent Grace to be for ever crown'd. 9 So shall my Soul with Praise, O God, extol thy wondrous Love; And on thy Name with Patience wait; for this thy Saints approve.

A Psalm of David

Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 52 First Line: Why gloriest thou in injury Lyrics: 1 Why gloriest thou in injury O might man of pow'r The goodness of almighty God for ever does endure. 2 Thy tongue vents mischief which thy heart devises wickedly; And like a sharp'ned razor works and wounds deceitfully. 3 Thou lovest evil more than good; more to speak wrong, than right; 4 And in devouring words dost thou, deceitful tongue, delight 5 God will for ever thee destroy, will pull and pluck thee out From thine own house; and from the land of life, he will thee root. (Selah) 6 The righteous this shall also see, with trembling in that day; And yet with holy triumph then pointing at thee, shall say; 7 'Lo! this the man that made not GOD 'his strength; but trusted in 'His store of riches, and himself, 'ev'n strength'ned in his sin. 8 But in the house of GOD am I, as a green olive tree; And in the grace of GOD my trust for evermore shall be. 9 Because thou this hast justly done, I'll praise thee evermore; And on thy name will wait; for this is good thy saints before.

Quid gloriariss

Author: J. H. Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 52 First Line: Why dost thou tyrant boast abroad Lyrics: 1 Why dost thou tyrant boast abroad thy wicked works to praise? Dost thou not know there is a God, whose mercies last alwaies? 2 Why doth thy mind yet still devise such wicked wiles to warp? Thy tongue untrue in forging lies is like a razor sharp. 3 On mischiefe why setst thou thy mind, and wilt not walk upright? Thou hast more lust false tales to find, than bring the truth to light. 4 Thou dost delight in fraud and guile, In mischiefe, blood and wrong: Thy lips have learn'd the flattering stile O false deceitfull tongue. 5 Therefore shall God for aye confound, and pluck thee from thy place: Thy seed root out from off the ground, and so shall thee deface. 6 The just when they behold thy fall, with feare will praise the Lord, And in reproach of thee withall, cry out with one accord: 7 Behold the man that doth not take the Lord for his defence: But in his goods his god did make, his trust his corrupt sense. 8 But I as Olive fresh and green, shall spring and spread abroad: For why? my trust all times hath been upon the living God. 9 For this therefore will I give praise to thee with heart and voice: I will set forth thy Name alwaies, wherein thy Saints rejoyce.

I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever.
