"I cry till all my voice be gone, In tears I waste the day: My God, behold my longing eyes, And shorten thy delay. "They hate my soul without a cause, And still their number grows More than the hairs around my head, And mighty are my foes. "'Twas then I paid that dreadful debt That men could never pay, And gave those honors to thy law Which sinners took away." Thus in the great Messiah's name, The royal prophet mourns; Thus he awakes our hearts to grief, And gives us joy by turns. "Now shall the saints rejoice, and find Salvation in my name; For I have borne their heavy load Of sorrow, pain, and shame. "Grief, like a garment, clothed me round, And sackcloth was my dress, While I procured for naked souls A robe of righteousness. "Amongst my brethren and the Jews I like a stranger stood, And bore their vile reproach, to bring The Gentiles near to God. "I came in sinful mortals' stead, To do my Father's will; Yet when I cleansed my Father's house, They scandalized my zeal. "My fasting and my holy groans Were made the drunkard's song; But God, from his celestial throne, Heard my complaining tongue. "He saved me from the dreadful deep, Nor let my soul be drowned; He raised and fixed my sinking feet On well-established ground. "'Twas in a most accepted hour My prayer arose on high; And for my sake my God shall hear The dying sinner's cry. He sinks in floods of deep distress; How high the waters rise! While to his heav'nly Father's ear He sends perpetual cries. "Hear me, O Lord, and save thy Son, Nor hide thy shining face; Why should thy fav'rite look like one Forsaken of thy grace? "With rage they persecute the man That groans beneath thy wound, While for a sacrifice I pour My life upon the ground. "They tread my honor to the dust, And laugh when I complain; Their sharp insulting slanders add Fresh anguish to my pain. "All my reproach is known to thee, The scandal and the shame; Reproach has broke my bleeding heart, And lies defiled my name. "I looked for pity, but in vain; My kindred are my grief: I ask my friends for comfort round, But meet with no relief. "With vinegar they mock my thirst, They give me gall for food; And sporting with my dying groans, They triumph in my blood. The Jews, his brethren and his kin, Abused the Man that checked their sin; While he fulfilled thy holy laws, They hate him, but without a cause. ["My Father's house," said he, "was made A place for worship, not for trade:" Then scatt'ring all their gold and brass He scourged the merchants from the place.] [Zeal for the temple of his God Consumed his life, exposed his blood; Reproaches at thy glory thrown He felt, and mourned them as his own.] [His friends forsook, his followers fled, While foes and arms surround his head; They curse him with a sland'rous tongue, And the false judge maintains the wrong.] His life they load with hateful lies, And charge his lips with blasphemies; They nail him to the shameful tree: There hung the Man that died for me. [Wretches with hearts as hard as stones Insult his piety and groans; Gall was the food they gave him there, And mocked his thirst with vinegar.] But God beheld, and from his throne Marks out the men that hate his Son; The hand that raised him from the dead, Shall pour the vengeance on their head. Save me O God from Waves that roll

Appears in 12 hymnals Matching Instances: 3 Scripture: Psalm 69 Lyrics: 1 Save me, O God, from Waves that roll, And press to overwhelm my Soul. 2 With painful Steps in Mire I tread, And Deluges o'erflow my Head. 3 With restless Cries my Spirits faint; My Voice is hoarse with long Complaint; My Sight decays with tedious Pain, Whilst for my God i wait in vain. 4 My Hairs, tho' num'rous, are but few, Compar'd with Foes that me pursue With groundless Hate, grown now of Might, To execute their lawless Spite: Thy force me, guiltless, to resign, As Rapine, what by Right was mine. 5 Thou, Lord, my Innocence dost see, Nor are my Sins conceal'd from Thee. 6 Lord God of Hosts, take timely Care, Lest, for my sake, thy Saints despair: 7 Since I have suffer'd for thy Name Reproach, and hide my Face in Shame; 8 A Stranger to my Country grown, Nor to my nearest Kindred known; A Foreigner, expos'd to Scorn By Brethren of my Mother born. 9 For Zeal to thy lov'd House and Name Consumes me like devouring Flame; Concern'd at their Affronts to Thee, More than at Slanders cast on me. 10 My very Tears and Abstinence They construe in a spiteful Sense. 11 When cloath'd with Sackcloth for their sake, They me their common Proverb make. 12 Their Judges make my Wrongs their Jest, Those Wrongs they ought to have redress'd. How should I then expect to be From Libels of lewd Drunkards free? 13 But, Lord, to Thee I will repair For Help, with humble, timely Pray'r: Relieve me from thy Mercy's Store: Display thy Truth's preserving Pow'r. 14 From threat'ning Dangers me relieve, And from the Mire my Feet retrieve; From spiteful Foes in Safety keep, 15 Controul the Deluge, ere it spread, And roll its Waves above my Head; Nor deep Destruction's yawning Pit To close her Jaws on me permit. 16 Lord, hear the humble Pray'r I make, For thy transcending Goodness' sake; Relieve thy Supplicant once more From thy abounding Mercy's Store. 17 Nor from thy Servant hid thy Face; Make haste; for desp'rate is my Case; 18 Thy timely Succour interpose, And shield me from remorsless Foes. 19 Thou know'st what Infamy and Scorn I from my Enemies have borne; Nor can their close-dissembled Spite, Or darkest Plots, escape thy Sight. 20 Reproach and Grief have broke my Heart: I look'd for some to take my Part, To pity or relieve my Pain; But look'd, alas! for both in vain. 21 With Hunger pin'd, for Food I call; Instead of Food, they give me Gall; And when with Thirst my Spirits sink, They give me Vinegar to drink. 22 Their Table therefore to their Health Shall prove a Snare, a Trap their Wealth; 23 Perpetual Darkness seize their Eyes; And sudden Blasts their Hopes surprise. 24 On them Thou shalt thy Fury pour, 'Till thy fierce Wrath their Race devour; 25 And make their House a dismal Cell, Where none will e'er vouchsafe to dwell. 26 For new Afflictions they procur'd For him who had thy Stripes endur'd; And made the wounds thy Scourge had torn To blend afreash with sharper Scorn. 27 Sin shall to Sin their Steps betray, Till they to Truth have lost the Way. 28 From Life thou shalt exclude their Soul, Nor with the Just their Names inrol. 29 But me, how'er distress'd and poor, Thy strong Salvation shalt restore; 30 Thy Pow'r with Songs I'll then proclaim, And celebrate with Thanks thy Name. 31 Our God shall this more highly prize, Than Herds or Flocks in Sacrifice: 32 Which humble Saints with Joy shall see, And hope for like Redress with me. 33 For God regards the Poor's Complaint; Sets Pris'ners free from close Restraint. 34 Let Heav'n, Earth, Sea, their voices raise, And all the world resound His Praise. 35 For God will Sion's Walls erect; Fair Judah's Cities He'll protect; Till all her scatter'd Sons repair To undisturb'd Possession there. 36 This Blessing they shall, at their Death, To their religious Heirs bequeath; And they to endless Ages more, Of such as His blest Name adore.

Psalm 69: Save me, O God, because the floods

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 7 hymnals Matching Instances: 2 Scripture: Psalm 69 First Line: Save me, O God, because the floods Lyrics: 1Save me, O God, because the floods do so environ me, That ev’n unto my very soul come in the waters be. 2I downward in deep mire do sink, where standing there is none: I am into deep waters come, where floods have o’er me gone. 3I weary with my crying am, my throat is also dry’d; Mine eyes do fail, while for my God I waiting do abide. 4Those men that do without a cause bear hatred unto me, Than are the hairs upon my head in number more they be: They that would me destroy, and are mine en’mies wrongfully, Are mighty: so what I took not, to render forc’d was I. They that would me destroy, and are mine en’mies wrongfully, Are mighty: so what I took not, to render forc’d was I. 5Lord, thou my folly know’st, my sins not cover’d are from thee. 6Let none that wait on thee be sham’d, Lord God of hosts, for me. O Lord, the God of Israel, let none, who search do make, And seek thee, be at any time confounded for my sake. 7For I have borne reproach for thee, my face is hid with shame. 8To brethren strange, to mother’s sons an alien I became. 9Because the zeal did eat me up, which to thine house I bear; And the reproaches cast at thee, upon me fallen are. 10My tears and fasts, t’ afflict my soul, were turned to my shame. 11When sackcloth I did wear, to them a proverb I became. 12The men that in the gate do sit against me evil spake; They also that vile drunkards were of me their song did make. 13But, in an acceptable time, my pray’r, Lord, is to thee: In truth of thy salvation, Lord, and mercy great, hear me. 14Deliver me out of the mire, from sinking do me keep; Free me from those that do me hate, and from the waters deep. 15Let not the flood on me prevail, whose water overflows; Nor deep me swallow, nor the pit her mouth upon me close. 16Hear me, O Lord, because thy love and kindness is most good; Turn unto me, according to thy mercies’ multitude. 17Nor from thy servant hide thy face: I’m troubled, soon attend. 18Draw near my soul, and it redeem; me from my foes defend. 19To thee is my reproach well known, my shame, and my disgrace: Those that mine adversaries be are all before thy face. 20Reproach hath broke my heart; I’m full of grief: I look’d for one To pity me, but none I found; comforters found I none. 21They also bitter gall did give unto me for my meat: They gave me vinegar to drink, when as my thirst was great. 22Before them let their table prove a snare; and do thou make Their welfare and prosperity a trap themselves to take. 23Let thou their eyes so darken’d be, that sight may them forsake; And let their loins be made by thee continually to shake. 24Thy fury pour thou out on them, and indignation; And let thy wrathful anger, Lord, fast hold take them upon. 25All waste and desolate let be their habitation; And in their tabernacles all inhabitants be none. 26Because him they do persecute, whom thou didst smite before; They talk unto the grief of those whom thou hast wounded sore. 27Add thou iniquity unto their former wickedness; And do not let them come at all into thy righteousness. 28Out of the book of life let them be raz’d and blotted quite; Among the just and righteous let not their names be writ. 29But now become exceeding poor and sorrowful am I: By thy salvation, O my God, let me be set on high. 30The name of God I with a song most cheerfully will praise; And I, in giving thanks to him, his name shall highly raise. 31This to the Lord a sacrifice more gracious shall prove Than bullock, ox, or any beast that hath both horn and hoof. 32When this the humble men shall see, it joy to them shall give: O all ye that do seek the Lord, your hearts shall ever live. 33For God the poor hears, and will not his prisoners contemn. 34Let heav’n, and earth, and seas, him praise, and all that move in them. 35For God will Judah’s cities build, and he will Sion save, That they may dwell therein, and it in sure possession have. 36And they that are his servants’ seed inherit shall the same; So shall they have their dwelling there that love his blessed name.
