Glory be to God on high

Author: Charles Wesley, 1707-1788 Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.7.7.6 Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 9:6 Lyrics: 1 Glory be to God on high, and peace on earth descend; God comes down, he bows the sky, and shows himself our friend! God the invisible appears, God the blest, the great I AM, sojourns in this vale of tears, and Jesus is his name. 2 Him the angels all adored, their maker and their king: tidings of their humbled Lord they now to mortals bring: emptied of his majesty, of his dazzling glories shorn, being’s source begins to be, and God himself is born! 3 See the eternal Son of God a mortal son of man, dwelling in an earthly clod whom heaven cannot contain! Stand amazed ye heavens at this! See the Lord of earth and skies humbled to the dust he is, and in a manger lies! 4 We earth's children now rejoice, the Prince of peace proclaim, with heaven’s host lift up our voice, and shout Emmanuel’s name; knees and hearts to him we bow; of our flesh, and of our bone, Jesus is our brother now, and God is all our own! Ancient of Days, Who Sittest Throned in Glory

Author: William C. Doane Meter: 11.10.11.10 Appears in 197 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 9:6 Lyrics: 1 Ancient of Days, who sittest throned in glory, To Thee all knees are bent, all voices pray; Thy love has blessed the wide world's wondrous story With light and life since Eden's dawning day. 2 O Holy Father, who hast led Thy children In all the ages, with the fire and cloud, Through seas dry-shod, through weary wastes bewildering; To Thee, in reverent love, our hearts are bowed. 3 O Holy Jesus, Prince of Peace and Saviour, To Thee we owe the peace that still prevails, Stilling the rude wills of men's wild behavior, And calming passion's fierce and stormy gales. 4 O Holy Ghost, the Lord and the Life Giver, Thine is the quickening power that gives increase; From Thee have flowed, as from a pleasant river, Our plenty, wealth, prosperity, and peace. 5 O Triune God, with heart and voice adoring, Praise we the goodness that doth crown our days; Pray we that Thou wilt hear us, still imploring Thy love and favor, kept to us always. My heart and voice I raise

Your kingdom shall increase till all the world your glory see, and righteousness abound as the great deep profound, and fill the earth with purity. We Walk Today in Darkness

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Isaiah 9:2 First Line: We walk today in darkness, Lyrics: We walk today in darkness, each waiting for the light of Love that works for justice and seeks to make things right. We wait, sometimes forgetting we do not wait alone, that others long for justice and blessings yet unknown. We walk today in darkness, our purpose unfulfilled. We do not do for others the good that God has willed. We do not offer kindness to those who wait in need, nor justice to our neighbors in every word and deed. We walk today in darkness, our vain hearts filled with shame. We follow our own footsteps and not the Spirit's flame. Self-love bedims our vision, self-interest clouds our sight, and good intentions vanish like shadows in the night. Lord Jesus, light our darkness; with joy dispel our gloom. Prepare us to receive you, and in our lives make room for humble, loving-kindness, for just and honest ways, that we might walk together in Love-illumined days. Topics: Prayer Paraphrase of General Confession Used With Tune: BARDSLEY
