Psalm 77: Unto the Lord I with my voice

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 77 First Line: Unto the Lord I with my voice Lyrics: 1Unto the Lord I with my voice, I unto God did cry; Ev’n with my voice, and unto me his ear he did apply. 2I in my trouble sought the Lord, my sore by night did run, And ceased not; my grieved soul did consolation shun. 3I to remembrance God did call, yet trouble did remain; And overwhelm’d my spirit was, whilst I did sore complain. 4Mine eyes, debarr’d from rest and sleep, thou makest still to wake; My trouble is so great that I unable am to speak. 5The days of old to mind I call’d, and oft did think upon The times and ages that are past full many years agone. 6By night my song I call to mind, and commune with my heart; My sp’rit did carefully enquire how I might ease my smart. 7For ever will the Lord cast off, and gracious be no more? 8For ever is his mercy gone? fails his word evermore? 9Is’t true that to be gracious the Lord forgotten hath? And that his tender mercies he hath shut up in his wrath? 10Then did I say, That surely this is mine infirmity: I’ll mind the years of the right hand of him that is most High. 11Yea, I remember will the works performed by the Lord: The wonders done of old by thee I surely will record. 12I also will of all thy works my meditation make; And of thy doings to discourse great pleasure I will take. 13O God, thy way most holy is within thy sanctuary; And what god is so great in pow’r as is our God most high? 14Thou art the God that wonders do’st by thy right hand most strong: Thy mighty pow’r thou hast declar’d the nations among. 15To thine own people with thine arm thou didst redemption bring; To Jacob’s sons, and to the tribes of Joseph that do spring. 16The waters, Lord, perceived thee, the waters saw thee well; And they for fear aside did flee; the depths on trembling fell. 17The clouds in water forth were pour’d, sound loudly did the sky; And swiftly through the world abroad thine arrows fierce did fly. 18Thy thunder’s voice alongst the heav’n a mighty noise did make; By lightnings lighten’d was the world, th’ earth tremble did and shake. 19Thy way is in the sea, and in the waters great thy path; Yet are thy footsteps hid, O Lord; none knowledge thereof hath. 20Thy people thou didst safely lead, like to a flock of sheep; By Moses’ hand and Aaron’s thou didst them conduct and keep.

Psalm 77 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 55 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 77 First Line: To God I cried with mournful voice Lyrics: To God I cried with mournful voice, I sought his gracious ear, In the sad day when troubles rose, And filled the night with fear. Sad were my days, and dark my nights, My soul refused relief; I thought on God the just and wise, But thoughts increased my grief. Still I complained, and still oppressed, My heart began to break; My God, thy wrath forbade my rest, And kept my eyes awake. My overwhelming sorrows grew, Till I could speak no more; Then I within myself withdrew, And called thy judgments o'er. I called back years and ancient times When I beheld thy face; My spirit searched for secret crimes That might withhold thy grace. I called thy mercies to my mind Which I enjoyed before; And will the Lord no more be kind? His face appear no more? Will he for ever cast me off? His promise ever fail? Has he forgot his tender love? Shall anger still prevail? But I forbid this hopeless thought; This dark, despairing frame, Rememb'ring what thy hand hath wrought; Thy hand is still the same. I'll think again of all thy ways, And talk thy wonders o'er; Thy wonders of recovering grace, When flesh could hope no more. Grace dwells with justice on the throne; And men that love thy word Have in thy sanctuary known The counsels of the Lord. Topics: Afflictions hope in them; Hope in darkness; Afflictions very great; Comfort from ancient providences; Israel saved from Egypt, and brought to Canaan; Melancholy and hope; Patience in darkness; Providence recorded; Remembrance of former deliverances

Psalm 77 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 30 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 77 First Line: How awful is thy chast'ning rod! Lyrics: "How awful is thy chast'ning rod!" May thy own children say: "The great, the wise, the dreadful God! How holy is his way !" I'll meditate his works of old, The King that reigns above; I'll hear his ancient wonders told, And learn to trust his love. Long did the house of Joseph lie With Egypt's yoke oppressed; Long he delayed to hear their cry, or gave his people rest. The sons of good old Jacob seemed Abandoned to their foes; But his almighty arm redeemed The nation that he chose. Isr'el, his people and his sheep, Must follow where he calls; He bade them venture through the deep, And made the waves their walls. The waters saw thee, mighty God! The waters saw thee come; Backward they fled, and frighted stood, To make thine armies room. Strange was thy journey through the sea Thy footsteps, Lord, unknown; Terrors attend the wondrous way That brings thy mercies down. [Thy voice, with terror in the sound, Through clouds and darkness broke; All heav'n in lightning shone around, And earth with thunder shook. Thine arrows through the skies were hurled; How glorious is the Lord! Surprise and trembling seized the world, And his own saints adored. He gave them water from the rock, And safe, by Moses' hand, Through a dry desert led his flock Home to the promised land.] Topics: Afflictions hope in them; Hope in darkness; Afflictions very great; Comfort from ancient providences; Israel saved from Egypt, and brought to Canaan; Melancholy and hope; Patience in darkness; Providence recorded; Remembrance of former deliverances

In time of tribulation

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 44 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 77 Lyrics: In time of tribulation, Hear, Lord, my feeble cries, With humble supplication To Thee my spirit flies: 188 My heart with grief is breaking, Scarce can my voice complain; Mine eyes, with tears kept waking, Still watch and weep in vain. The days of old, in vision, Bring vanish'd bliss to view; The years of lost fruition Their joys in pangs renew; Remember'd songs of gladness, Through night's lone silence brought, Strike notes of deeper sadness, And stir desponding thought. Hath God cast off for ever? Can time His truth impair? His tender mercy, never Shall I presume to share? Hath He His loving-kindness Shut up in endless wrath? No;--this is my own blindness, That cannot see His path. I call to recollection The years of His right hand, And, strong in His protection, Again through faith I stand: Thy deeds, O Lord! are wonder, Holy are all Thy ways, The secret place of thunder Shall utter forth Thy praise. Thee, with the tribes assembled, O God! the billows saw; 189 They saw Thee, and they trembled, Turn'd, and stood still with awe: The clouds shot hail--they lighten'd, The earth reel'd to and fro; The fiery pillar brighten'd The gulph of gloom below. Thy way is in great waters, Thy footsteps are not known; Let Adam's sons and daughters Confide in Thee alone: Through the wild sea Thou leddest Thy chosen flock of yore; Still on the waves Thou treadest, And Thy redeem'd pass o'er. Topics: Despondency corrected; Past and present

A Psalm of Asaph

Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 77 First Line: I with my voice to God did cry Lyrics: 1 I with my voice to GOD did cry; ye with my voice aloud I cry's to GOD; and graciously to me his ear He bow'd. 2 In my distress I sought the Lord, my sore ran in the night, And ceased not; my soul refus'd, all comfort and delight. 3 I thought on GOD and troubled was yet more; without relief; I meditated till my soul was overwhelm'd with grief. (Selah.) 4 In ev'ry watch of tedious night, Thou kepst my soul awake; My trouble swell'd to such excess, I groan'd, but could not speak. 5 I call'd to mind the days of old, with signal mercies crown'd; Those famous years of ancient time, for wondrous works renown'd. 6 Yea, to my memory I recall'd the songs by night I had; I commun'd with my thoughtful heart, strict search my spirit made. [2 Part] 7 Alas! said I, what will the Lord, cast off, and not restore? And from henceforth will He afford, no favour any more? 8 Is all his mercy ceas'd and gone? must that no more avail? The gracious promises He made, shall they for ever fail? 9 Or is it true, that to be kind, my God forgotten hath? And that his tender mercies He hath shut up in his wrath? 10 Then said I, this my weakness is, who have no pow'r to stand; But I'll remember the most High, and years of his right hand. 11 The works of JAH I'll call to mind, his actions manifold; I'll surely to remembrance call thy wondrous works of old. 12 On all thy works I'll meditate, and of thy doings talk. 13 Thy way, O GOD, is Holiness, where Thou dost ever walk. [3 Part] 14 What God so great as our GOD is? Thou God, hast wonders done: Among the people Thou thy strength, hast openly made known. 15 Thy people Thou from bondage hast by thy strong arm set free; Of Joseph and of Israel, the vast Posterity. (Selah.) 16 Thee did the waters see, O GOD, Thee see with trembling fear: The mighty deeps with all their waves, in great commotion were. 17 The clouds their floods of water pour'd, the skies sent forth a sound; Thine arrows in thy storms of hail, flew terribly around. 18 Thy dreadful voice from heaven above in roaring thunders broke: Thy light'nings blaz'd thro'out the world, the earth in horror shook. 19 Thy way was in the troubled sea, a wondrous way was shown; Thy paths thro' might waters were, thy steps cannot be known. 20 By Moses and by Aaron's hand, Thou, as thy people's head, Thro' the vast desart like a flock, didst them in safety lead.

To the chief Musician to Jeduthun. A Psalm of Asaph

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 77 First Line: My voice was to the mighty God Lyrics: 1 My voice was to the mighty God, Yea, cried out I have: My voice was to the mighty God, An ear to me he gave. 2 In my distress I sought the Lord, My sore ran in the night, And ceased not; my soul also Refused comfort quite. 3 I did remember God, likewise Disquieted was I: I did complain, my spir't also O'erwhel'd was heavily. Selah. 4 Awaking thou dost hold mine eyes; I cannot speak for fears. 5 I have considered days of old, Of ancient times the years. [2] 6 To my remembrance I do call The song in night I had: I commun'd with my heart, also Strict search my spirit made. 7 For ever will the Lord cast off? And pleas'd will he not be? 8 His tender mercy is it ceas'd To perpetuity? His promise doth it fail for aye? 9 What to be gracious Hath God forgotten? and shut up In wrath his bowels thus? 10 When said I, this my weakness is, Yet to remembrance I Will call the years of the right hand Of him that is most high. 11 I will unto remembrance call The Actions of the Lord: Thy wondrous works of ancient time I surely will record. 12 I'll muse of all thy works likewise And of thy doings talk. 13 Within the temple is the way, O God where thou dost walk. [3] 14 What God so great as our God is? Works wonderful that are Thou God hast done' among the folk Thou dost thy strength declare 15 Thy people thou from thraldom hast With thy strong arm set free, Of Jacob and of Joseph too Those that the children be. Selah. 16 Thee did the waters see, O God, Thee did the waters see: They were afraid, the deeps also Could not but troubled be. 17 With waters were the clouds pour'd forth The skies a sound out sent: Also thine arrows on each side Abroad dispersed went. 18 Thy thunders voice in heave was; Thy lightnings they did make, The world enlightned, and the earth Did tremble and did shake. 19 Thy ways i'th' sea, thy paths and steps Unknown are in the deep. 20 By Moses and by Aaron's hand Thou led'st thy folk like sheep.

To God I cry'd, who to my Help

Appears in 5 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 77 Lyrics: 1 To God I cry'd, who to my Help did graciously repair; 2 In Trouble's dismal Day I sought my God with humble Pray'r. All Night my fest'ring Wound did run; no Med'cine gave Relief; My soul no Comfort would admit, my Soul indulg'd her Grief. 3 I thought on God, and Favours pass'd; but that increas'd my Pain: I found my Spirit more oppress'd, the more i did complain. 4 Thro' ev'ry Watch of tedious Night Thou keep'st my eyes awake; My Grief is swell'd to that Excess, I sigh, but cannot speak. 5 I call'd to mind the Days of old, with signal Mercy crown'd; Those famous Years of antient Times. for Miracles renoewn'd. 6 By Night I recollect my songs, on former Triumphs made; Then search, consult, and ask my Heart, Where's now that wond'rous Aid? 7 Has God for ever cast us off? withdrawn His Favour quite? 8 Are both His Mercy and his Truth retir'd to endless Night? 9 Can His long-practis'd Love forget its wonted Aids to bring? Has He in Wrath shut up and seal'd His Mercy's healing spring? 10 I said, My Weakness hints these Fears; But I'll my Fears disband; I'll yet remember the Most High, and Years of His Right-hand. 11 I'll call to mind His Works of old the Wonders of His Might; 12 On them my Heart shall meditate, my Tongue shall them recite. 13 Safe lodg'd from human Search on high O God, thy Councils are! Who is so great a God as ours? who can with him compare? 14 Long since a God of wonders Thee thy rescu'd People found; 15 Long since hast Thou thy chosen Seed with strong Deliv'rance crown'd. 16 When thee, O God, the Waters saw, the righted Billows shrunk; The troubled Depths themselves for Fear beneath their Channels sunk. 17 The Clouds pour'd down, while rending skies did with their Noise conspire; Thy Arrows all abroad were snet, wing'd with avenging Fire. 18 Heav'n with thy Thunder's Voice was torn, whilst all the lower world With Lightning blaz'd, Earth shook & seem'd from her Foundations hurl'd. 19 Thro' rolling Streams thou find'st thy Way thy Paths in Waters lie; Thy wond'rous Passage, where no Sight thy Footsteps can descry. 20 Thou ledd'st thy People like a Flock safe through the desart Land, By Moses, their meek skilful Guide, and Aaron's sacred Hand.

To God my loud Complaints I made

Appears in 1 hymnal Scripture: Psalm 77 Lyrics: 1 To God my loud Complaints I made, And he vouchsaf'd his powerful Aid; He to my humble Pray'r. Did lend a gracious Ear. All Night my fest'ring Wound did ragem, No Med'cine could the Pain assuage: My Soul indulg'd her Grief, Nor would accept Relief. 2 I thought on God, but then distress'd, I found my Spirits quite oppress'd; The more i did complain, The more encreas'd my Pain; My Grief is swell'd to such a Height, That thro' each tedious Watch of Night, Mine Eyes are kept awake; I sigh, but cannot speak. 3 I call'd to Mind those ancient Days, When I, exalted, sung thy Praise; Those Years so much renown'd; With signal Favours crown'd; By Night I recollect the Song That to my Trimphs did belong, And once such Joy impart, Then thus consult my Heart. 4 "Hath GOD withdrawn His Favour quite, "Is Mercy lost in endless Night? "Will he his promis'd Love "For evermore remove?" I said My Weakness doth supply These Fears, but in the LORD most high I shall securely stand, Protected by his Hand. 5 His Works of old I will relate, On them my Heart shall meditate; My Tongue shall them recite, The Wonders of his Might. Thy Promise, LORD, is ever sure, Thy Ways are holy, just, and pure, And deep thy Counsels are, Who can with thee compare? 6 Thou art the LORD, that dost display Amazing Wonders every Day, And all the World shall own, That thou art GOD alone; And Jacob's Seed and Joseph's Line, Have known thy Strength and Pow'r divine, Who didst thy Arm extend, And them with Might defend. 7 When thee, O GOD, the Waters saw, The troubled Deep was struck with Awe, The frigten'd Billows shrunk, And in their Channels sunk: The Clouds pour'd down, while rending Skies, Fill'd Earth and Heav'n with dread Surprize, And forth thine Arrows came, Wing'd with avenging Flame 8 Broad Sheets of livid Blaze appear; Thy Thunders roll, Earth shakes with Fear, Thy Paths in Waters lie; Nor can thy Steps descry: Thy People from hard Bondage freed, Thou didst by skillful Moses lead, And Aaron's sacred Hand, Safe thro' a desart Land.
