Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.66 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 30:6-12 First Line: Firm was my health, my day was bright Lyrics: Firm was my health, my day was bright, And I presumed 'twould ne'er be night; Fondly I said within my heart, "Pleasure and peace shall ne'er depart." But I forgot thine arm was strong Which made my mountain stand so long: Soon as thy face began to hide, My health was gone, my comforts died. I cried aloud to thee, my God, "What canst thou profit by my blood? Deep in the dust can I declare Thy truth, or sing thy goodness there? "Hear me, O God of grace," I said, "And bring me from among the dead:" Thy word rebuked the pains I felt, Thy pard'ning love removed my guilt. My groans, and tears, and forms of woe Are turned to joy and praises now; I throw my sackcloth on the ground, And ease and gladness gird me round My tongue, the glory of my frame, Shall ne'er be silent of thy name; Thy praise shall sound through earth and heav'n For sickness healed and sins forgiv'n. Praise

Author: Watts Hymnal: Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs #CLXVII (1792) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Psalm 30:4-5 First Line: Hosanna to the Prince of light Lyrics: 1 Hosanna to the Prince of light, That cloth'd himself in clay; Enter'd the iron gates of death, And tore the bars away. 2 Death is no more the king of dread, Since our Immanuel rose; He took the tyrant's sting away, And spoil'd our hellish foes. 3 See how the conq'ror mounts aloft, And to his Father flies, With scars of honuor in his flesh, And triumph in his eyes. 4 There our exalted Savior reigns, And scatters blessings down; Our Jesus fills the middle seat Of the celestial throne. 5 Raise your devotion, mortal tongues, To reach his blest abode, Sweet be the accents of your songs To our incarnate God. 6 Bright angels, strike your loudest strings, Your sweetest voices raise; Let heav'n and all created things. Sound our Immanuel's praise. Topics: The Resurrection of Christ, who arose for our Justification Languages: English

I'll celebrate thy Praises, Lord

Hymnal: A New Version of the Psalms of David #XXX (1760) Scripture: Psalm 30 Lyrics: 1 I'll celebrate thy Praises, Lord, who did'st thy Pow'r employ To raise my drooping Head, and check my Foes insulting Joy. 2,3 In my Distress I cry'd to Thee, who kindly didst relieve, And from the Grave's expecting Jaws my hopeless Life retrieve. 4 Thus to his Courts, ye Saints of his, with Songs of Praise repair; With me commemorate his Truth, and providential Care. 5 His Wrath has but a Moment's Reign; His Favour no Decay: Your Night of Grief is recompens'd with Joy's returning Day. 6 But I, in prosp'rous Days, presum'd no suddent Change I fear'd: Whilst in my Sun-shine of Success no low'ring Cloud appear'd. 7 But soon I found thy Favour, Lord, my Empire's only Trust; For when thou hidd'st thy Face, I saw my Honour laid in Dust. 8 Then, as I vainly had presum'd, my Error I confess'd; And thus with supplicating Voice, thy Mercy's Throne address'd: 9 "What Profit is there in my Blood, "congeal'd by Death's cold Night? "Can silent Ashes speak thy Praise, "thy wond'rous Truth recite? 10 "Hear me, O Lord! in Mercy hear; "thy wonted Aid extend: "Do Thou send Help, on whom alone "I can for Help depend." 11 'Tis done! Thou hast my mournful Scene to Songs and Dances turn'd; Invested me in Robes of State, who late in Sack-cloth mourn'd. 12 Exalted thus, I'll gladly sing thy Praise in grateful Verse; And, as thy Favours endless are, thy endless Praise rehearse. A Psalm and song at the Dedication of the House of David

Hymnal: The Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs of the Old and New-Testament #PXXX (1742) Scripture: Psalm 30 First Line: Lord, I will thee extol on high Lyrics: 1 Lord, I will thee extol on high, For thou hast made me rise; And joyful hast not made to be O'er me mine enemies. 2 I Lord my God to thee cry'd have, And thou hast made me whole, 3 Jehovah thou out of the grave Hast raised up my soul. From pit's descent thou quicknedst me, 4 O sing unto the Lord, And ye his saints give thanks when ye His holiness record. 5 For's wrath doth but a while abide, Life in his love doth stay: If weeping lodge at ev'ning tide, Yet joy at break of day. 6 For in my prosp'rous state I said, Now shall I never slide, 7 Lord, by thy favour thou hast made My mountain fast abide 8 Thou hid'st thy face, I troubled was, Lord I to thee did cry; Also my humble suit for grace Unto the Lord made I. 9 What profit in my blood can be, When I to pit go down? Shall dust give glory unto thee? Shall it thy truth make known? 10 Do thou me, O Jehovah, hear, And on me mercy have: To me, Jehovah, be thou near, And helper me to save. 11 My mourning then a dance into For me thou turned hast: With joy thou didst me gird also, And off my sackcloth cast. 12 So shall my glory sing thy praise, And never silent be; Jehovah, O my God always I will give thanks to thee. Thanks be to God, who heard our pray'r

Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #CLX (1816) Scripture: Psalm 30 Lyrics: 1 Thanks be to God, who heard our pray'r, When we had fears and doubt; When fierce diseases ev'ry where, Compass'd our land about. 2 When death, that cruel tyrant made, Poor mortals feel his pow'r; And in another world have fled, Not to return no more. 3 How melancholy was the sound, To hear they dying groan: Can no relief or help be found, Till we are fled and gone. 4 And must our troubled spirits fly, To God, who first them gave; Our bodies only made to die! And moulder in the grave. 5 Great God, how mournful was the scene; Where e'er his was the case; But great thy mercies e'er have been, To those who trust thy grace. 6 Thanks be to God, that we are spar'd, To see the present day. O, make us ready, gracious Lord, Till we be call'd away. Topics: Thanksgiving after Diseases Languages: English

With Heart and Voice in one Accord

Hymnal: The Psalms of David #XXX (1767) Scripture: Psalm 30 Lyrics: 1 With Heart and Voice in one Accord, I'll celebrate thy Praises, LORD: For thou hast set me up on high, Ev'n when insulting Foes were nigh; With Fury they my Peace assail'd, 'Till thy all-conqu'ring Arm prevali'd. 2 In my Distress I cry'd to thee, Who didst in Mercy set me free; My Eyes were almost clos'd in Death, And I had nigh resign'd my Breath; When thou my hopeless Life retriev'd, And from the Grave my Soul reliev'd. 3 Thus in his Courts, with Songs of Praise, Ye Saints your grateful Voices raise; His Truth and tender Love declare, And bless his providential Care: His tender Mercies loud proclaim, And ever bless his glorious Name. 4 His Anger soon is over-pass'd, His Favours will forever last; Tho' Sorrow may a Night endure, Yet in his loving Kindness sure; For with the chearful Dawn of Morn, His chearing Mercy will return. Your Night of Grief is recompens'd with Joy's returning Day. Part II 6 But I presum'd in prosp'rous Days, My Glory's yet unsully'd Rays; And as no low'ring clouds appear'd, So I no sudden Danger fear'd: I thought the LORD my Ways approve'd, And I should never be remov'd. 6 But soon I found thy Favour, LORD! Alone could solemn Joy afford: For when thy Face was trun'd away, My blooming Hopes dishonour'd lay; My Sin I humbly then confess'd, And thus again the LORD address'd. 7 "What Profit in my Blood is found, "When cold congealed in the Bround? "Can silent Ashes ever raise, "The glorious Tribute of thy Praise? "Oh then thy wonted Aid extend, "For on thee only I depend!" 11 'Tis done, and thou hast chang'd my Fate, Investing me in Robes of State; Thou hast my Grief to Gladness turn'd, Tho' lately I in Sack-cloth mourn'd; Therefore my Songs, with grateful Joy, In praising thee, I will employ. In hymns of praise will I employ my tongue

Hymnal: New Version of the Psalms of David #XXX (1756) Scripture: Psalm 30 Lyrics: 1 In hymns of praise will I employ my tongue; My tuneful harp shall answer to the song. To thee, O Lord; for, when with pain distrest, And foes around their cruel joy exprest, Me in the evil day didst thou sustain, My foes indulg'd their impious hopes in vain. 2 Struck with die dire disease, to thee I cried; Nor was, O God, thy healing hand denied; 3 For from the dreary horrors of the grave, When he implor'd, didst thou thy servant save, His soul, just hov'ring o'er the pit retrieve, And gav'st again, in joyous health to live. 4 O all ye saints, his gracious goodness sing; Display his praises on the trembling firing; 5 For but a moment his dread anger lives, While life, his quick-returning favour gives; And, tho' the night in sighs, in tears, you spend, The dawning morn will all your sorrows end. 6 Surpriz'd with my success, elate with pride, Big with my empty self, I fondly cried; "Strong in my happiness, my foes I dare, "Nor open force, nor secret fraud, I fear." 7 By heav'n supported, like a mountain firm, That braves the thunder, and disdains the storm, Did I the angry bolts of fate deride, And wrapt my heart in arrogance and pride; But soon the folly of my ways I found, Lost thy support, and felt a killing wound. 8 'Twas then my reason to my soul return'd; In deep repentance I my madness mourn'd; For thy forgiveness humbly sued, O Lord, My guilt acknowledg'd, and thy aid implor'd. 9 "What profit is there (said I) in my blood? "Justly thy vengeance has my crimes pursued. "But can the dead thy wondrous works proclaim? "Can dull, can ashes, celebrate thy name? 10 "O hear me, hear me, and thy mercy shew; "Redeem my soul from death, my life from woe," 11 Nor vainly did I pray; thy mercy heard; My fainting soul in all her sorrows chear'd, My grief to joy, my tears to laughter turn'd; No more I languish'd, and no more I mourn'd. 12 Therefore thy goodness will I constant sing, And to thy glorious name attune the string; Therefore in hymns harmonious I'll display Thy clemency; thy love, from day to day. All laud and praise with heart and voice

Author: J. H. Hymnal: The Whole Book of Psalms #XXX (1790) Scripture: Psalm 30 Lyrics: 1 All laud and praise with heart and voice, O Lord, I give to thee, Who didst not make my foes rejoice, but hast exalted me. 2 O Lord my God, to thee I cry'd in all my pain and grief; Thou gav'st an ear and didst provide to ease me with relief. 3 Thou, Lord, hast brought my soul from hell, and thou the same didst save From them, that in the pit do dwell, and kept'st me from the grave. 4 Sing praise, ye saints, that prove and see the goodness of the Lord; In honour of his Majesty rejoice with one accord. 5 For why? his anger but a space doth last, ceasing again; But in his favour and his grace always doth life remain. 6 Tho' heaviness and pangs full sore abide with us all night, The Lord to joy shall us restore, before the day be light. 7 When I enjoy'd the world at will, thus would I boast and say, Tush, I am sure to feel no ill, my wealth shall not decay; 8 For thou, O Lord, of thy good grace didst send me strength and aid; But when thou turn'dst away thy face, my mind was sore dismay'd, 9 Wherefore again then did I cry to thee, O Lord of might, And my complaints did multiply, praying both day and night. 10 What gain is in my blood, said I, if death destroy my days? Can dust declare thy majesty, or give thy truth its praise? 11 Wherefore, my God, some pity take, O Lord, I thee desire; Do not, O Lord, my soul forsake, of thee I help require. 12 Then thou didst turn my grief and woe into a cheerful voice; My sackcloth didst take off also, and mad'st me to rejoice, 13 Wherefore my soul incessantly shall sing unto thy praise; O Lord my God, to thee will I give laud and thanks always. Doth dust declare thy Majesty, or yet thy truth doth praise? 10 Wherefore my God some pity take, O Lord I thee desire: Do not this simple soule forsake, of help I thee require. 11 Then didst thou turn my grief & woe into a cheerfull voice: The mourning weed thou tolok'st me fro, and mad'st me to rejoyce, 12 Wherefore my soule uncessantly shall sing unto thy praise: My Lord my God to thee will I give laud and thanks alwais. Strength of the still secluded thought

Author: A. L. Waring Hymnal: Hymns and Meditations #17 (1873) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 30:11-12 Lyrics: Strength of the still secluded thought, That fears, yet longs its joy to show, — The hope, the awe, in mercy taught To make me strong, to keep me low; Now shall my girded heart rejoice, In praise poured out, in love expressed; Now will I bless Thee, with a voice That shall not break this sacred rest. Once, moved by every mortal pain, By every pleasure quickly past, I feared to speak in joyful strain Of hidden life that might not last. Now, from a well that will not fail, In Thee my deep rejoicing springs — Now from Thy rest within the veil, My spirit looks on passing things. Once, with Thy tired ones homeward bent, In hope that rose their fears above, My leaping heart could be content To greet them with a silent love; I too had walked with weary feet, And heard the exulting shout too near — I too had felt the toil and heat, The wind and storm I did not fear. Perhaps the Heavenward look in store, The speechless prayer for strength or rest, Might help those needy spirits more Than hope set forth, or joy expressed. But I was changed, I knew not how, By the same love that chose their ways, — I might be just as weary now, And yet rejoice to hear Thy praise. Now would I cheer the faint in heart With sound of joy they too shall see; Now would I put the fear apart, That bids me hide Thy strength in me. What though the mortal flesh be frail, The willing spirit prone to sink — There is a stream in Baca's vale, Whereof Thy feeblest child may drink. Some, in their sorrow, may not know How near their feet those waters glide — How peaceful fruits for healing grow, And flowers for beauty by their side. They may not see, with weeping eyes Upon the dreary desert bent, How glorious straight before them, lies The Eden of their soul's content. But, O my Savior, I can see For them, what once for me was seen; I know, whate'er their sufferings be, The tender mercy which they mean. I do not watch, with anxious care, To see the end of their distress — Thou knowest what the heart must bear, The human heart which Thou wilt bless. And in their daily deepening need Of heavenly love, for strength or rest, They are already blest indeed — Yea, and much more they shall be blest. Wrapt in the spirit of Thy praise, As from Gerizim's height, I see Blessing poured out on all the ways, That prove Thy children's need of Thee. O wondrous love, so strong to smite — So meek the opposing will to tame! It was Thy hand put forth in might, That led me through the flood, the flame. When, needing strength to bear Thy rod, By the smooth stream I found repose, It was Thy grace, All–seeing God, Thy love that smote me, ere I rose. How could I look for lengthened rest, With Thy deep sufferings scarcely known, Or lay forever on Thy breast, The perfect heart which Thou wilt own? The heart, that guilty of Thy woes, Looks only upon Thee to mourm, And feels the cross Thy love bestows, A burden easy to be borne. And yet that pause was not in vain — It was a blessing meet to give Strength, for the labor and the pain, Whereby alone my soul might live. How gently thence Thy mighty hand My lingering spirit onward bare! How precious, in a barren land, The footprints of Thy people were! There many hearts that knew Thy ways The safety of my soul could see — And there I heard the song of praise, That Faith poured out to Heaven for me. O, more than all the ease I sought, That song the desert path could bless And dearer in my deepest thought, The love that met me in distress. Now that Thy mercies on my head The oil of joy for mourning pour, — Not as I will my steps be led, But as Thou wilt for evermore. Henceforth, whate'er my heart's desire, Fulfil in me Thy own design, I need the fountain and the fire — And both, O King of Saints, are thine. Now that my sense of rest in Thee, Rules over every rising fear, Pain, pleasure, all I feel and see, Thy counsels to my soul endear. Now can my girded heart rejoice, In praise poured out, in love expressed — Now may I bless Thee, with a voice That shall not break this sacred rest. Languages: English

Waiting for Morning

Hymnal: Miscellaneous Pieces in Verse and Prose #26 (1780) Scripture: Psalm 30:5 First Line: Long and mournful is the night Lyrics: Long and mournful is the night, Mental night of gloomy fear: Source of comfort, source of light When, O when wilt thou appear! Thy beams alone can bid the gloom depart, And spread celestial morning o'er my heart. Morning of that glorious day Which the blest enjoy above, Where with full unclouded ray Shines thy everlasting love: Where joy triumphant fills the bright abode, O happy world! fair paradise of God! Thither if the heart aspire, Shall it, Lord, aspire in vain? Shall the breathings of desire Rise with unavailing pain? O thou my guide, my solace, and my rest, In this sad desert shall I rove unblest? Sure the Lord of life is near Though a cloud his face conceal: Jesus, when wilt thou appear, When thy cheering beams reveal? When shall thy beams of soul-reviving light Dispel this gloomy cloud this mental night? Not in vain aspires the heart That depends on thee alone; Light and joy thou wilt impart, Radiant dawn of bliss unknown. Here let me wait beneath thy guardian wing Till from thy smile celestial morning spring. Languages: English

Health, Sickness, and Recovery

Hymnal: Psalms #30b (1793) Scripture: Psalm 30:6 First Line: Firm was my health, my day was bright Lyrics: 1 Firm was my health, my day was bright, And I presum'd ’twould ne’er be night: Fondly I said within my heart, "Pleasure and peace, shall ne’er depart." 2 But I forgot thine arm was strong, Which made my mountain stand so long; Soon as thy face began to hide, My health was gone, my comforts died. 3 I cried aloud to thee my God; “What canst thou profit by my blood? "Deep in the dust can I declare "Thy truth, or sing thy goodness there? 4 "Hear me, O God of grace, I said, "And bring me from among the dead:" Thy word rebuk'd the pains I felt, Thy pard'ning love remov'd my guilt. 5 My groans, and tears, and forms of woe, Are turn'd to joy and praises now; I throw my sackcloth on the ground, And ease and gladness gird me round. 6 My tongue, the glory of my frame, Shall ne’er be silent of thy name; Thy praise shall sound thro' earth and heav'n, For sickness heal'd and sins forgiv'n.
