How Blest Are They Whose Trespass

Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 31 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 32 Lyrics: 1 How blest are they whose trespass has freely been forgiven, whose sins are wholly covered before the sight of heaven. Blest they to whom the LORD God does not impute their sin, who have a guileless spirit, whose heart is true within. 2 While I kept guilty silence, my strength was spent with grief: your hand was heavy on me; my soul found no relief. But when I owned my trespass and did not hide my sin, then you forgave my guilt, LORD, restored my life within. 3 So let the godly seek you in times when you are near; no whelming floods shall reach them or cause their hearts to fear. O LORD, you are my refuge, you are my hiding place, and you surround me always with songs of saving grace. 4 "I graciously will teach you the way that you should go, and, with my eye upon you, help you my counsel know. Then do not be unruly or slow to understand; be not perverse, but willing to heed my wise command." 5 The sorrows of the wicked increase from year to year, but those who trust the LORD God know love instead of fear. Then in the LORD be joyful, in song lift up your voice; be glad in God, you righteous: rejoice, O saints, rejoice! Topics: New Year - Old Year; Confession of Sin; Forgiveness; Grace; Lord's Supper; New Year - Old Year Used With Tune: RUTHERFORD Text Sources: Psalter, 1912, alt.

Jesus, Lover of My Soul

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 3,219 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 32:7 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high; hide me, O my Savior, hide till the storm of life is past; safe into the haven guide; O receive my soul at last. 2 Other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless soul on thee; leave, O leave me not alone, still support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring; cover my defenseless head with the shadow of thy wing. 3 Thou, O Christ, art all I want; more than all in thee I find; raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name, I am all unrighteousness; false and full of sin I am, thou art full of truth and grace. 4 Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art, freely let me take of thee; spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity. Psalm 32

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 25 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 32 First Line: Happy the man to whom his God Lyrics: Happy the man to whom his God No more imputes his sin, But, washed in the Redeemer's blood, Hath made his garments clean! Happy beyond expression he Whose debts are thus discharged; And from the guilty bondage free, He feels his soul enlarged. His spirit hates deceit and lies, His words are all sincere; He guards his heart, he guards his eyes, To keep his conscience clear. While I my inward guilt suppressed, No quiet could I find; Thy wrath lay burning in my breast, And racked my tortured mind. Then I confessed my troubled thoughts, My secret sins revealed; Thy pard'ning grace forgave my faults, Thy grace my pardon sealed. Author: John Newton Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1,621 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 32:7 Lyrics: 1 How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer's ear! It soothes my sorrows, heals my wounds, and drives away my fear. It makes the wounded spirit whole, and calms the troubled breast; it satisfies the hungry soul, and gives the weary rest. 2 Dear name, the rock on which I build, my shield and hiding-place, my never-failing treasury, filled with boundless stores of grace, Jesus, my Shepherd, Brother, Friend, my Prophet, Priest, and King, my Lord, my life, my way, my end-- accept the praise I bring. 3 Weak is the effort of my heart and cold my warmest thought; but when I see you as you are, I'll praise you as I ought. He's blest, whose Sins have Pardon gained

Appears in 34 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 32 Lyrics: 1 He's blest, whose Sins have Pardon gain'd. No more in Judgment to appear; 2 Whose Guilt Remission has obtain'd And whose Repentance is sincere. 3 While I concel'd the fretting Sore, My Bones consum'd without Relief; All Day did I with Anguish roar; But no Complaints asswag'd my Grief. 4 Heavy on me thy Hand remain'd, By Day and Night alike distress'd; Till quite of vital Moisture drain'd, Like Land with Summer's Drought oppress'd. 5 No sooner I my Wound disclos'd, The Guilt that tortur'd me within, But thy Forgiveness interpos'd, And Mercy's healing Balm pour'd in. 6 True Penitents shall thus succeed, Who seek Thee whilst Thou mayst be found; And, from the common Deluge freed, Shall see remorseless Sinners drown'd. 7 Thy Favour, Lord, in all Distress, My Tow'r of Refuge I must own: Thou shalt my haughty Foes suppress, And me with songs of Triumph crown. 8 In my Instruction then confide, You that would Truth's safe Path descry: Your Progress I'll securely guide, And keep you in my watchful Eye. 9 Submit yourselves to Wisdom's Rule, Like Men that Reason have attain'd; Not like th' ungovern'd Horse and Mule, Whose Fury must be curb'd and rein'd. 10 Sorrows, on Sorrows multiply'd, The harden'd Sinner shall confound; But them who in his Truth confide, Blessings of Mercy shall surround. 11 His Saints, that have perform'd his Laws, Their Life in Triumphs shall employ: Let them (as they alone have Cause) In grateful Raptures shout for Joy.

Thou art my hiding place, O Lord

Author: Thomas Raffles Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 112 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 32:7 Lyrics: 1 Thou art my hiding place, O Lord, In thee I put my trust; Encouraged by thy holy Word, A feeble child of dust: I have no argument beside, I urge no other plea; And 'tis enough my Saviour died, My Saviour died for me. 2 When storms of fierce temptation beat, And furious foes assail, My refuge is the mercy-seat, My hope within the veil. From strife of tongues and bitter words My spirit flies to thee: Joy to my heart the thought affords, My Saviour died for me. 3 'Mid trials heavy to be borne, When mortal strength is vain, A heart with grief and anguish torn, A body racked with pain, Ah! what could give the suff'rer rest, Bid ev'ry murmur flee, But this, the witness in my breast That Jesus died for me? 4 And when thine awful voice commands This body to decay, And life, in its last ling'ring sands, Is ebbing fast away, Then though it be in accents weak, And faint and tremblingly, O give me strength in death to speak, "My Saviour died for me." Psalm 32: O blessed is the man to whom

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 9 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 32 First Line: O blessed is the man to whom Lyrics: 1O blessed is the man to whom is freely pardoned All the transgression he hath done, whose sin is covered. 2Bless’d is the man to whom the Lord imputeth not his sin, And in whose sp’rit there is no guile, nor fraud is found therein. 3When as I did refrain my speech, and silent was my tongue, My bones then waxed old, because I roared all day long. 4For upon me both day and night thine hand did heavy lie, So that my moisture turned is in summer’s drought thereby. 5I thereupon have unto thee my sin acknowledged, And likewise mine iniquity I have not covered: I will confess unto the Lord my trespasses, said I; And of my sin thou freely didst forgive th’ iniquity. 6For this shall ev’ry godly one his prayer make to thee; In such a time he shall thee seek, as found thou mayest be. Surely, when floods of waters great do swell up to the brim, They shall not overwhelm his soul, nor once come near to him. 7Thou art my hiding-place, thou shalt from trouble keep me free: Thou with songs of deliverance about shalt compass me. 8I will instruct thee, and thee teach the way that thou shalt go; And, with mine eye upon thee set, I will direction show. 9Then be not like the horse or mule, which do not understand; Whose mouth, lest they come near to thee, a bridle must command. 10Unto the man that wicked is his sorrows shall abound; But him that trusteth in the Lord mercy shall compass round. 11Ye righteous, in the Lord be glad, in him do ye rejoice: All ye that upright are in heart, for joy lift up your voice.

A Psalm of David, Maschil

Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 32 First Line: O blessed is the man to whom Lyrics: 1 Oh blessed is the man to whom Trespass is pardoned, And to whom transgression Is wholly covered. 2 O blessed is the man to whom The Lord imputes not sin; And he who such a spirit hath That guile is not therein. 3 My bones whilst I did silence keep, With age did wear away, By reason of my roaring cry, Continuing all the day. 4 For heavily thy hand did lie Upon me day and night; That into summers scorching drought My moisture turned quite. Selah. 5 My sinful trespass unto thee I have acknowledge, And my perverse iniquity I have not covered. Against my self my sins said I, I'll to the Lord confess; and then of mine iniquity Thou didst the sin release. Selah. 6 For this each godly one to thee In finding time shall pray; Surely in floods of waters great, Come nigh him shall not they. 7 Thou art my hiding place, thou shalt From trouble set me free; Thou with songs of deliverance Shall round encompass me. Selah. 8 To thee I will instruction give, Teach thee likewise will I the way wherein thou shouldest go, I'll guide thee with mine eye. 9 Be ye not like the horse and mule Which do not understand, Whose mouths with bridle-bit we rule, To bring them to command. 10 To every one that wicked is Their sorrows do abound: But him that on the Lord relies, Shall mercy compass round. 11 Be joyful in Jehovah ye, Ye righteous ones rejoice: And all in heart that upright be, Shout forth with chearful voice.

Beati quorum

Author: T. S. Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 32 First Line: The man is blest whose wickednesse Lyrics: 1 The man is blest whose wickednesse the Lord hath cleane remitted: And he whose sin and wickednesse is hid and also covered. 2 And blest is he to whom the Lord imputeth not his sin: Which in his heart hath hid no guile, nor fraud is found therein. 3 For whilst that I kept close my sin in silence and constraint: My bones did weare and waste away with daily mome and plaint. 4 For night and day thy hand on me so grievous was and smart, That all my bloud and humours moist to drinesse did convert. 5 I did therefore confesse my faults, and all my sins discover, Then thou, O Lord, didst me forgive, and all my sinnes passe over. 6 The humble man shall pray therefore, and seek thee in due time, So that the flouds of waters great shall have no power on him. 7 When trouble and adversity do compasse me about: Thou art my refuge and my joy, and thou didst rid me out. 8 Come hither and I will thee teach how thou shalt walk aright: I will thee guide as I my self have learn'd by proofe and sight. 9 Be not so rude and ignorant, as is the horse and mule: Whose mouth without a reine or bit from harm thou canst not rule. 10 The wicked man shall manifold sorrowes and griefs sustaine: But unto him that trusts in God his goodnesse shall remaine. 11 Be merry therefore in the Lord, ye just lift up your voice: And ye of pure and perfect heart, be glad and eke rejoyce.
