After gradÂuÂaÂtion from school, EliÂza beÂgan teachÂing. HowÂevÂer, her caÂreer was cut short by a serÂiÂous spinÂal probÂlem. She parÂtialÂly reÂcovÂered, but was an inÂvalÂid most of her life. She then turned to hymn writÂing, which ran in the famÂiÂly—her couÂsin was hymnÂist EdÂgar Stites.
