Farewell Song

Alas that we must part

Tune: [Alas that we must part]
Published in 1 hymnal

Representative Text

1 Alas that we must part,
Friends who have been so dear;
Be still each heavy heart,
There yet are words of cheer,
Perhaps we'll meet again,
Once more united be;
Once more clasp kindly hands,
Each others faces see.

Chorus:
Grieving so sadly, We whisper farewell,
While mournfully, slowly now toileth the bell,
Telling of partings that ever must be,
Till we through the darkness our Saviour shall see.

2 Our dearest loves decay,
On earth it must be so,
Lest we forget our heaven,
In bliss of life below,
So prone are human hearts
To wander far from God,
That parting scenes must be,
And paths of grief be trod. [Chorus]

3 Forget not all the joys,
Together we have known;
But let them still be dear,
When parted and alone,
And sometimes let each one,
Have tho'ts of prayer for those,
The friends to whom the tide
Of recollection flows. [Chorus]

4 It may be that the close
Of life be seen by some,
E'er meeting here again,
Our willing footsteps come,
Then will our prayerful tho'ts,
Swift haste them on their way
From earthly toil and care
To the Kingdom of the Day. [Chorus]
