Notes

(ii.) Christe da Lamm Gottes. In the Reformation period this translation of the Agnus Dei, in 3 stanzas of 3 lines, was regarded as a prose antiphon rather to be included in the Liturgy than in the Hymn-book. Thus Erk, (Choral Buch, 1863, note to No. 38, p. 245,) quotes it as in Low German in the Brunswick Kirchenordnung, 1528, and in High German in that for Saxony, 1540. It is given as a hymn in the Unverfälscher Leidersegen, 1851, No. 88. The translations in common use are, (1) "Lamb of God, our Saviour," in full, by A. T. Russell as No. 20 in the Dalston German Hospital Collection, 1848. (2) ”Lamb of God, O Jesus! Thou who," &c, in full, as No. 68 in the Ohio Lutheran Hymnal, 1880. [Rev. James Mearns, M.A.]
