Source: Evangelical Lutheran Worship (Psalm text)

Notes: Responsorial refrain to reading of Psalm 136. Tone included for chanting. The first refrain assumes that the psalm will be chanted and that the refrain will be sung by all at the second half of each verse. When using this option, observe the pointing of the psalm for the first half of each verse and sing the refrain for the second half. The refrain built into each verse of the psalm allows for a variety of interpretations. The psalm may be sung responsively between solo voice and congregation or antiphonally between two groups singing in harmony. The Refrain indications are disregarded when using this option. The alternate refrain should be used when speaking the psalm or when chanting the entire text to the alternate tone. Sing the refrain as indicated when using the alternate refrain/tone.
