Representative Text

1 Have mercy, Lord, on us,
For you are ever kind;
Though we have sinned before you, Lord,
Your mercy let us find.

2 Lord, wash away our guilt,
And cleanse us from our sin;
For we confess our wrongs and see
How great our guilt has been.

3 The joy your grace can give,
Let us again obtain;
And may your Spirit’s firm support
Our spirits then sustain.

4 To God the Father, Son,
And Spirit glory be,
Who was and is and shall be so
For all eternity.

Notes

Have mercy, Lord, on me. Tate & Brady, [Psalms li.] This S.M. rendering of Psalms 51 was given in the New Version, 1698 (q.v.), in 17 stanzas of 4 lines, divided into two parts, and is a good example cf the renderings therein in that metre. As found in modern hymn-books in Great Britain and America it is given in an abbreviated form of three or more stanzas, and often with a doxology also from the New Version. Few collections agree, however, in their selection of stanzas. The arrangement of stanzas as in Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1875, is in more extensive use than any other.

Samuel Howard (b. London, England, 1710; d. London, 1782) composed ST. BRIDE as a setting for Psalm 130 in William Riley's London psalter, Parochial Harmony (1762).
