How Pleased and Blest Was I

How pleased and blessed was I,
To hear the people cry,
"Come, let us seek our God today;"
Yes with a cheerful zeal,
We haste to Zion's hill,
And there our vows and honors pay,
(Repeat previous line).

2.
Zion, thrice happy place,
Adorned with wondrous grace,
And walls of strength embrace thee round
In thee our tribes appear,
To pray, and praise, and hear
The sacred gospel's joyful sound,
(Repeat previous line).

3.
There David's greater Son
Has fixed his royal throne:
He sits for grace and judgment there
He bids the saints be glad,
He makes the sinner sad,
And humble souls rejoice with fear,
(Repeat previous line).

May peace attend thy gate,
And joy within thee wait,
To bless the soul of every guest;
The man that seeks thy peace,
And wishes thine increase,
A thousand blessings on him rest,

My tongue repeats her vows,

Author: Isaac Watts

Isaac Watts was the son of a schoolmaster, and was born in Southampton, July 17, 1674. He is said to have shown remarkable precocity in childhood, beginning the study of Latin, in his fourth year, and writing respectable verses at the age of seven. At the age of sixteen, he went to London to study in the Academy of the Rev. Thomas Rowe, an Independent minister. In 1698, he became assistant minister of the Independent Church, Berry St., London. In 1702, he became pastor. In 1712, he accepted an invitation to visit Sir Thomas Abney, at his residence of Abney Park, and at Sir Thomas' pressing request, made it his home for the remainder of his life. It was a residence most favourable for his health, and for the prosecution of his literary… Go to person page >
