Representative Text

1. If you ask me why I’m happy as I journey down life’s road,
Why it is I do not carry on the way a heavy load,
’Tis because my Savior tells me that my burden He’ll receive.
And I believe it, every word I believe.

Refrain
I believe it, every word I believe,
I receive it, every word I receive;
Jesus tells me my wants He will relieve,
And I believe it, every word I believe.

2. We are not allowed to wander thro’ this world without a Guide,
For, to keep our feet from straying, His own Word has been applied,
And we read here that the sentence of a sinner He’ll reprieve,
And I believe it, every word I believe. [Refrain]

3. He informs us for our comfort that thro’ life He’ll be our Friend,
That if we will only trust Him, He’ll go with us to the end,
That His Spirit will be with us while we do not slight nor grieve,
And I believe it, every word I believe. [Refrain]

4. He has told us of a city where the streets are paved with gold,
Where the faithful shall be gathered and their Savior’s face behold,
He has promised at its portals that our souls He will receive,
And I believe it, every word I believe. [Refrain]

Johnson Oatman, Jr., son of Johnson and Rachel Ann Oatman, was born near Medford, N. J., April 21, 1856. His father was an excellent singer, and it always delighted the son to sit by his side and hear him sing the songs of the church. Outside of the usual time spent in the public schools, Mr. Oatman received his education at Herbert's Academy, Princetown, N. J., and the New Jersey Collegiate Institute, Bordentown, N. J. At the age of nineteen he joined the M.E. Church, and a few years later he was granted a license to preach the Gospel, and still later he was regularly ordained by Bishop Merrill. However, Mr. Oatman only serves as a local preacher. For many years he was engaged with his father in the mercantile business at Lumberton… Go to person page >
