Representative Text

1 It is all for the best, O my Father,
All for the best, all for the best;
Whether teardrops or smiles be my portion,
Labor or rest;
Thy love each pleasure singles,
Each cup of sorrow mingles;
Thy hand in mercy sends them all,
Great things and small.

Refrain:
All for the best, all for the best;
All for the best, all for the best;
Shadow or sunlight, labor or rest,
It is all for the best.

2 It is all for the best, O my Father,
Poor or in wealth, poor or in wealth;
For thine arm will sustain and uphold me,
In pain or heath;
Thy wisdom guides me ever,
Thy grace forsakes me never,
If I but lean upon Thee, Lord,
Trusting Thy word. [Refrain]

3 It is all for the best, O my Father,
Still for the best, still for the best;
Then I never will shrink from fulfilling
All Thy behest;
I would be Thine in meekness;
Have pity on my weakness;
Let me not lay the burden down;
No cross, no crown. [Refrain]
