O Christ, Our King, Creator, Lord

Representative Text

1 O Christ, our King, Creator, Lord,
Savior of all who trust thy Word,
to them who seek thee ever near,
now to our praises bend thine ear.

2 In thy dear cross a grace is found
(it flows from ev'ry streaming wound)
whose pow'r our inbred sin controls,
breaks the firm bond, and frees our souls.

3 Thou didst create the stars of night;
yet thou hast veiled in flesh thy light,
hast deigned a mortal form to wear,
a mortal's painful lot to bear.

4 When thou didst hang upon the tree,
the quaking earth acknowledged thee;
when thou didst there yield up thy breath,
the world grew dark as shades of death.

5 Now in the Father's glory high,
great Conqu'ror, nevermore to die,
us by thy mighty pow'r defend,
and reign through ages without end.

"A saint among saints," he was considered second to none in Rome in grammar, rhetoric, and logic. In early life, before his father's death, he became a member of the Senate; and soon after he was thirty and ac… Go to person page >

He attended Yale College (supporting himself by teaching) and was ordained in 1835. A pastor in Congregational churches in Bath, Maine (1835-1850), and Albany, New York (1850-1865), he also served as secretary of the American Congregational Union (1865-1878). Palmer was a popular preacher and author, writing original poetry as well as translating hymns. He published several volumes of poetry and hymns, including Sabbath Hymn Book (1858), Hymns and Sacred Pieces (1865… Go to person page >
