Cyprian of Carthage (September 13)

Representative Text

1 O Cyprian, convert to the faith,
Made bishop of the Carthage See,
Beset, by schism, war and strife,
Preached to the faithful unity.

2 O Cyprian, you did teach that we
who God Almighty Father call,
Must claim the church, The Bride of Christ
As the true mother of us all.

3 O Cyprian, you did teach that we
outside the church cannot be saved,
Help us to bring forth penitents
Unto Christ’s font, that they be laved.

4 Steadfast defender of the truth,
through Afric’s coast you gained renown,
Who persecuted, and besieged,
Received, at last, the martyr’s crown.

5 O Cyprian bishop, martyr blest
Pray for us at God’s heav’nly throne,
That we, who Christ’s true faith confess
May Father, Son and Spirit own.
