Representative Text

1 O’er mountain and valley, from shore unto shire,
Wherever his flag is unfurled,
The Sunday School army is marching along,
For lo! it encircles the world.

Chorus:
Marching today, marching today,
In paths where the Savior has gone;
Marching today, marching today,
The Sunday School army moves on.

2 Straight forward it pressed, obeying commands,
Each one is a soldier most true;
They follow their Leader with hearts undismayed,
Whatever he says they will do. [Chorus]

3 Without compromise, without parley with sin,
When souls for the Christ must be won,
The Sunday School army moves on with a cheer,
Their marching has only begun. [Chorus]

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
