Representative Text

1 The pearly gates of heaven
Now stand ajar for me;
I’ll soon be in the city,
Where lov’d ones I shall see.
Life’s journey now is ended,
On earth no more I’ll roam;
I’m waiting for the chariot
To come and take me home.

Refrain:
The pearly gates of heav’n now stand, now stand ajar for me,
The gates ajar for me,
The gates ajar for me;
The pearly gates of heav’n now stand, now stand ajar for me,
The gates ajar for me.

2 I’m tired, worn, and weary,
The journey has been long;
But soon I shall be resting
With heaven’s blood-washed throng.
I’ve reached the swelling Jordan,
I can no longer stay;
Although the waves are rolling,
Fearless I’ll launch away. [Refrain]

3 To earth, to home, and lov’d ones,
I bid a last farewell,
And ask you all to meet me,
At home with Christ to dwell.
Away from earth to heaven,
Triumphing, now I soar,
To join the heav’nly chorus,
Rejoicing evermore. [Refrain]
