1 There’s a blessed old story, so wondrously sweet,
That I heard, and it seemed like a dream,
For it told of a Saviour so gracious and kind,
Who had died on a cross to redeem.
Then I looked thro’ my tears to the hill far away,
Where I saw Him, by faith, on the tree,
And I asked, as I heard him pray “Father, forgive,”
Is it true? Can it all be for me?

Refrain:
It is true! It is true!
So wondrous and true,
For the Saviour from sin sets me free!
It is true! It is true!
So wondrous and true!
It is all for me, for me!

2 In that blessed old story I heard long ago
There’s a fountain whose deep waters flow
With power divine to wash sin stains away
And cleanse the heart whiter than snow.
Then my soul in its need sought the stream far and wide,
For I read “for the sinful ‘tis free,”
And I asked, as I plunged in its crimson-dyed flood,
Is it true? Can it all be for me? [Refrain]

3 In that blessed old story, unchanging, yet new,
There’s a promise of strength for the weak,
And for those who have fallen, tho’ oft it may be,
There’s help for each one who may seek.
So I read it again, and my heart throbbed with joy,
Lo! “My grace is sufficient for thee;”
And I asked, as I came to the One who has died,,
Is it true? Can it all be for me? [Refrain]

4 And that blessed old story more wonderful grows
As it tells of a city, most fair,
Where no sorrow can enter, nor sickness, nor death,
Nor sin in its happiness share;
And it tells of a mansion he’s gone to prepare
For all who from sin here are free,
And I asked, as I read it again and again,
Is it true? Can it all be for me? [Refrain]
