Representative Text

1 This world is not my home, I'm just a passing through
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue;
The angels beckon me from heaven's open door,
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore.

Chorus:
O Lord, you know I have no friend like you,
If heaven's not my home, then Lord what will I do?
The angels beckon me from heaven's open door,
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore.

2 They're all expecting me, and that's one thing I know,
My Savior pardoned me and now I onward go;
I know He'll take me thro' tho' I am weak and poor,
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore. [Chorus]

3 I have a loving Savior up in glory-land,
I don't expect to stop until I with Him stand,
He's waiting now for me in heaven's open door,
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore. [Chorus]

4 Just up in glory-land we'll live eternally,
The saints on every hand are shouting victory,
Their songs of sweetest praise drift back from heaven's shore,
And I can't feel at home in this world anymore. [Chorus]

Author: Anonymous

In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries. Go to person page >

Notes

The lyrics were first published in Joyful Meeting in Glory Song Book No. 1" published in 1919. The author was not attributed. A. P. Carter of The Carter Family adapted the lyrics (first line: This world is not my home, I'm just a-passing through) and recorded the song in 1931. He claimed the copyright in 1931 on the lyrics and music; the copyright was renewed in 1958. Albert E. Brumley's version of the lyrics is taken from Carter's adaptation, with a few minor changes.
