Born: April 8, 1854, North Grove, Ill­i­nois. Died: Ap­ril 20, 1911, Es­par­to, Cal­i­forn­ia. Cross was the son of Meth­od­ist Epis­co­pal min­is­ter Aar­on Cross of the Rock Ri­ver Con­fer­ence, Ill­i­nois. Ad­mit­ted to the Cal­i­for­nia Con­fer­ence in 1890, he joined the fa­cu­lty of the Un­i­ver­si­ty of the Pa­ci­fic in Stock­ton, Cal­i­forn­ia, in 1891, event­u­al­ly be­com­ing its act­ing pre­si­dent and vice-pre­si­dent.
