Betty Carr Pulkingham was born in 1928 and educated in North Carolina, receiving a B.S. in music from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now the University of North Carolina at Greensborough). Following graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music, she became an Instructor of Music Theory at the University of Texas. Her music career has also included the direction of choirs in schools and in churches, most notably, the choir of Church of the Redeemer, where her late husband, the Rev. Graham Pulkingham, served as rector. They became founding members of the Anglican-based Community of Celebration. John Carl Ylvisaker (liturgical songwriter, recording artist,composer, performer, ethnomusicologist) is perhaps best known for his hymn, “I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry” He was born in Moorhead, Minnesota and is a graduate of Concordia College located there. During the last 45 years John’s words and music have been a powerful influence on the development of new worship materials for the church, with his compositions appearing in hundreds of worship resources.
In addition to being an artist and composer, John’s past experience includes teaching high school music, directing church choirs, and serving as the producer of SCAN, an award-winning weekly radio program sponsored by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).… Go to person page >
