Post-installation procedures

Once a hymnal has been installed on the Hymnary, there a few things that need to be done. These post-installation procedures include authority resolution and proofing.

Authority resolution

When a hymnal is uploaded from a speadsheet the hymnal import scripts automatically connect the texts, tunes, and authors/composers to existing authorities when possible. (This is done by matching first lines, titles, or names.) However, there will often be texts, tunes, and persons that do not match any existing authority exactly, so they must be connected manually. Use the links to authority resolution under the Editor Tools for the hymnal.

There are a few options for connecting these texts, tunes, and persons to an authority:

  1. Find the correct existing authority on the Hymnary and connect this instance to it by entering the authority id in the field.
  2. If the authority does not exist, create a new authority.
  3. Alternatively, for text authorities simply delete the authority identifier on the edit page and a new authority will automatically be created using the information from the instance. (Not available for persons.)
  4. For tune authorities include the composers last name after the tune name.
  5. When making a new authority for an instance, make sure the copyright information is included on the authority page. If the text or tune are in the public domain, enter "Public Domain" in the copyright field of the authority.

Check all people, text and tune authorities to see if they are properly connected, especially when a spreadsheet is downloaded from a hymnal then uploaded after editing, as the spreadsheet will include authority IDs for texts and people and some of these may have changed during editing.

Proofing

Every hymnal should be proofed to verify that the information it contains is correct. Please see the proofing guidelines for more details about this step.
