The Music Division has custody of approximately 16,500 hymnals, tunebooks, and gospel songbooks. Identification and retrieval of these materials is possible through consulting a number of available of sources, i.e., the Library’s online catalog, the Dictionary of American Hymnology, the card catalogs of the Music Division, the United States Copyright Office in the Library of Congress, the National Union Catalog of Pre-1956 Imprints, and the automated bibliographic utilities that offer access to Library of Congress cataloging records. Hymnals without tunes are found in the library’s general collection and the Rare Book and Special Collections Reading Room; hymnals with tunes may also be found in some special collections in the Rare Book Room.
