Samuel Smith vs. Samuel Smith

You are here

In the course of correcting an instance of the tune NEWTON FERNS, which gave the composer's name as Sameul rather than Samuel Smith (Hymnary transcriber's error), I discovered a point of uncertainty regarding the identity of the composer. To wit,

was it composed by Smith_S1, 1821-1917, as the instance I was correcting claims, or was it composed by Smith_S, 1804-1873, as the hymnal I'm indexing, which led me to the corrigendum, asserts? Or, I suppose, is it possible that there was a single Samuel Smith whose dates of birth and death were somehow misstated? The tune authority gives (on what grounds I'm not sure) 1874 as date of composition, but if it was a posthumous publication this would not be an unreasonable date for a piece written by a chap who died in 1873. On the other hand, it appears that Smith_S is much more often cited as a text author than as a composer, while Smith_S1 is more often a composer than a lyricist.
