"Campfire" variant of Kum Ba Yah

You are here

I recently uploaded a spreadsheet for Praise Hymnal (PH2020), a contemporary Churches of Christ (Stone-Campbell) songbook published by Taylor Publications. #278 in the book is Kum Ba Yah, but the tune is completely different from the normal tune and has a refrain of “Rain, storm, fire, wind, kum ba yah."

Some research indicates that this variant has popped up in several denominations as a camp song, but Hymnary doesn't have an instance of this variant other than that in PH2020. It appears to have caught on in Churches of Christ in particular around the late 2000s – I can recall hearing it once in church around 2010 in a C/C youth group singing. I have not heard it since, however.
See also these examples of it being sung in Churches of Christ youth groups in 2010 and 2007, respectively:

Is there any other pertinent information available about this variant?
