Cushman, Elisha. (Kingston, Maine, May 2, 1788--October 26, 1838, Hartford, Connecticut). Baptist. Lineal descendant of Robert Cushman, one of the Pilgrim Fathers. Was converted in this twentieth year and shortly thereafter was licensed to the Christian ministry by the Kingston Baptist Church. Pastor of the Hartford, Connecticut, Baptist Church until 1825. Was the first editor of The Christian Secretary, starting in 1822. Later served as pastor of New Market Street Baptist Church, Philadelphia, 1825-1829; Stratford Baptist Church, Fairfield, Connecticut, 1829-1831; and First Baptist Church, New Haven, 1831-1835. Three of his hymns were included in Select Hymns, published in Hartford in 1836:
