Andrew Donaldson

b. 1951 Person Name: Andrew Donaldson, 1951- Alterer of "Go to dark Gethsemane" in The Book of Praise Andrew Donaldson, a composer and church musician, grew up in northern Ontario, Canada. He attended Glendon College, York University in Toronto, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974. He went on to study classical guitar performance at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, receiving its ARCT (Associate of Royal Conservatory Teachers) degree in 1979. Since then he has worked as a composer and performer in many contexts, in both French and English. Andrew co-edited the Book of Praise (1997), Presbyterian Church in Canada, with Donald Anderson. Their company, Binary Editions, continues to administer copyright for the PCC. In 2007 he was made a Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, by Knox College of the University of Toronto, for his body of work in congregational song in the Presbyterian Church in Canada. A. H. Mann

1850 - 1929 Person Name: Arthur H. Mann, (1850- ) Composer of "ORCHARD" in Hymns of the Kingdom of God Arthur Henry ‘Daddy’ Mann MusB MusD United Kingdom 1850-1929. Born at Norwich, Norfolk, England, he graduated from New College, Oxford. He married Sarah Ransford, and they had five children: Sarah, Francis, Arthur, John, and Mary. Arthur died in infancy. Mann was a chorister and assistant organist at Norwich Cathedral, then, after short stints playing the organ at St Peter’s, Wolverhampton (1870-71); St. Michael’s Tettenhall Parish Church (1871-75); and Beverley Minster (1875-76); he became organist at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge (1876-1929), Cambridge University organist (1897-1929), and music master and organist at the Leys School, Cambridge (1894-1922). In addition to composing an oratorio and some hymn tunes, he was music editor of the Church of England Hymnal (1894). In 1918 he directed the music and first service of “Nine lessons & carols” at King’s College Chapel. He was an arranger, author, composer, and editor. His wife, Sarah, died in 1918. F. A. Gore Ouseley

1825 - 1889 Person Name: Rev. Sir F. A. Gore Ouseley, Bart. Composer of "GETHSEMANE" in The Scottish Hymnal Born: August 12, 1825, London, England. Died: April 6, 1889, Hereford, England. Buried: Church of St. Michael and All Angels, Tenbury Wells, Hereford and Worcester, England. Gore-Ouseley was educated at Oxford University (BA 1846, MA 1849, DMus 1854), and was ordained in 1849. In 1855, he was appointed Oxford Professor of Music, succeeding Henry Bishop. At that time, Oxford music degrees were easy to obtain, as there were no conditions of residence. Candidates only had to submit a musical composition, (e.g., for choir or orchestra). This was then approved by the examiner, rehearsed and performed to a small, select audience at Oxford. As far as Ouseley was concerned, this only meant two or three trips to Oxford each year, usually for two or three days each time, as there was no music "taught" in the university and very little in Oxford itself at the time. Also in 1855, Ouseley was appointed Precentor of Hereford Cathedral, a post he held for the next 30 years, before becoming a Canon there. Although theoretically in charge of the cathedral choir, Ouseley only had to be in residence at the cathedral two months each year, and he arranged these to take place during the summer vacation, when he was not required to be at his College, although such was his commitment that he did make regular visits to the cathedral, which was only 18 miles from his College at St. Michael’s. His College of St. Michael’s, Tenbury, a "model" choir school, opened in 1856, mostly at his own expense. He founded the College and was its first Warden, which was the greater part of his work for the next 33 years. Ouseley’s compositions covered a wide range: operas, songs, chamber music and organ pieces. Charles Harford Lloyd

1849 - 1919 Harmonizer of "REDHEAD 76" in The United Methodist Hymnal Music Supplement II Born: October 16, 1849, Thornbury, Gloss, England. Died: October 16, 1919, Slough, England. Buried: Windsor Cemetery, Windsor, Berkshire, England. Lloyd attended Thornbury Grammar School and Rossall School, and was a Scholar of Magdalen School, Hertford College, Oxford (BMus 1871, BA 1872, MA 175, DMus 1891). He served as organist at Gloucester Cathedral (1876); Christ Church, Oxford (1882, succeeding Samuel Wesley); precentor of Eton College (1892); organist of the Chapel Royal (1914); and editor of Church Hymns (1903). Wilhelm A. F. Schulthes

1816 - 1879 Person Name: W. Schultes Composer of "REQUIEM" in Church Hymnal Wilhelm August Ferdinand Schulthes Germany 1816-1879. Born at Hesse Castle, Germany, son of a German army officer, he was raised Lutheran, but turned to Roman Catholicism around 1852. He directed the Brompton Oratory choir (1852-1872). He taught music at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Roehampton (1868-1879). He also wrote poetry. No information found regarding family or other life events. He died at Bois-de-Colombes, France. Christopher Tye

1497 - 1572 Person Name: Dr. Chr. Tye Composer of "[Go to dark Gethsemane]" in The Hymnal, Revised and Enlarged, as adopted by the General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America in the year of our Lord 1892 Tye, Christopher, MUS. D., born at Westminster in the reign of Henry VIII. He was celebrated as a musician, and was granted the degree of MUS. D. at Cambridge in 1545. He was musical tutor to King Edward VI., and organist of the Chapel Royal under Queen Elizabeth. Besides composing numerous anthems, he rendered the first fourteen chapters of the Acts of the Apostles into metre, which were set to music by him and sung in Edward 6th's Chapel, and published in 1553. 1758 - 1836 Person Name: Rev. Christian Ignatius La Trobe, 1758-1836 Composer of "LA TROBE" in Hymnal and Order of Service Born: February 12, 1758, Fulneck (near Leeds), Yorkshire, England. Died: May 6, 1836, Liverpool, England. La Trobe, Christian Ignatius, eldest son of Benjamin La Trobe, was born at the Moravian Settlement, Fulneck, Leeds, Yorkshire, Feb. 12, 1758, and educated in England and at the Brethren's College, Niesky, Silesia. Taking orders in the Moravian Church, he became in 1784 Secretary to their Society for the Furtherance of the Gospel, and in 1795 Secretary to the Unity of the Brethren in England. He died at Fairfield, near Liverpool, May 6, 1836. He is best known through his Selection of Sacred Music, in six volumes, which appeared in 1806-25.
