Edward Husband

1843 - 1908 Composer of "ST. EDITH" in The Cyber Hymnal Husband, Edward was educated at St. Aidan's College, Birkenhead. Taking Holy Orders in 1866, he was successively Curate of Atherstone and Folkestone; and in 1878 Vicar of St. Michael and All Angels, Folkestone. In 1874 Mr. Husband published The Mission Hymnal, in which appeared his hymns as follows:— 1. Alas! poor world, I loved thee long. Rest in Jesus. 2. And dost Thou ask me, dearest Lord. Christ's Invitation, " Follow Me." 3. I must have Jesus only. Jesus only desired 4. Sweet Blood, dear ransom of our souls. The Blood of Jesus. These hymns are very simple, earnest, and impassioned: and bear a great resemblance to Facer's compositions. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

William Henry Monk

1823 - 1889 Person Name: W. H. Monk (1823-1889) Arranger of "KOCHER" in Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) William H. Monk (b. Brompton, London, England, 1823; d. London, 1889) is best known for his music editing of Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861, 1868; 1875, and 1889 editions). He also adapted music from plainsong and added accompaniments for Introits for Use Throughout the Year, a book issued with that famous hymnal. Beginning in his teenage years, Monk held a number of musical positions. He became choirmaster at King's College in London in 1847 and was organist and choirmaster at St. Matthias, Stoke Newington, from 1852 to 1889, where he was influenced by the Oxford Movement. At St. Matthias, Monk also began daily choral services with the choir leading the congregation in music chosen according to the church year, including psalms chanted to plainsong. He composed over fifty hymn tunes and edited The Scottish Hymnal (1872 edition) and Wordsworth's Hymns for the Holy Year (1862) as well as the periodical Parish Choir (1840-1851). Bert Polman

Joseph of the Studium

762 - 832 Person Name: St. Joseph of the Studium Author of "O happy band of pilgrims" in The Church Hymnal Joseph of the Studium [Joseph of Thessalonica]. This person not the same person wrongly named by Dr. Neale in his Hymns of the Eastern Church as Joseph of the Studium, author of the great Canon for the Ascension. That Joseph is St. Joseph the Hymnographer. Joseph of Thessalonica, younger brother of St. Theodore of the Studium, q.v., was some time Bishop of Thessalonica, and died in prison, after great suffering inflicted by command of Theophilus. He was probably the author of the Triodia in the Triodion, and certainly of five Canons in the Pentecostarion to which his name is prefixed. His pieces have not been translated into English. [Rev. H. Ethelbert W. Bullinger

1837 - 1913 Person Name: Rev. E. W. Bullinger, D.D. Composer of "REX AMORIS" in The Durham Mission Tune Book Ethelbert William Bullinger DD United Kingdom 1837-1913. Born in Canterbury, he was an Anglican clergyman, Biblical scholar, and ultradispensationalist theologian and writer. Educated at King's College, London, he became a good organist, singer, and composer. He married Emma Dobson, 13 years his senior, and they had two sons. In 1861 he began as Associate Curate to the parish of St. Mary Magdelene, Bermondsey, and was ordained as priest in the Church of England in 1862. He served as parish curate in Tittleshall until 1866, then Notting Hill until 1869, them Leytonstone to 1870, and finally Walthamstow, until becoming Vicar of the new parish of St. Stephen's in 1874. He resigned his vicarage in 1888. In 1867 he was clerical secretary of the Trinitarian Bible Society, which he held (except for illnesses) until his death. The Society completed and published a Hebrew version of the New Testament, the Tanakh (introduction to the Hebrew Bible), formation of the Brittany evangelical Mission Society under Pasteur LeCoat and translation of the Bible into Breton, also producing the first ever Protestant Portuguese reference Bible. It also distributed Spanish Bibles in Spain after the 1868 Spanish Revolution. Bullinger, a practiced musician, collected and harmonized untranscribed hymns on his visits to Tremel, Brittany. David Evans

1874 - 1948 Harmonizer of "CAERLLEON" in Songs of Praise David Evans (b. Resolven, Glamorganshire, Wales, 1874; d. Rosllannerchrugog, Denbighshire, Wales, 1948) was an important leader in Welsh church music. Educated at Arnold College, Swansea, and at University College, Cardiff, he received a doctorate in music from Oxford University. His longest professional post was as professor of music at University College in Cardiff (1903-1939), where he organized a large music department. He was also a well-known and respected judge at Welsh hymn-singing festivals and a composer of many orchestral and choral works, anthems, service music, and hymn tunes. Bert Polman

1846 - 1910 Person Name: Rev. F. A. J. Hervey Composer of "BEDWYN" in The Children's Hymn Book Born: May 18, 1846, Westminster, Middlesex, England. Died: August 8, 1910, Norwich, England. Buried: St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, Sandringham, Norfolk, England. Son of Alfred, Lord Hervey, Frederick was educated at Marlborough and Trinity College, Cambridge (BA 1868, MA 1872). He was ordained a deacon in 1869, and priest in 1870.
