Good Joseph Had a Garden

Author: Alda M. Milner-Barry Meter: 7.6.8.6 D Appears in 11 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Good Joseph had a garden, Close by that sad, green hill Where Jesus died a bitter death To save mankind from ill. One evening in that garden, Their faces dark with gloom, They laid the Savior's body Within good Joseph's tomb. 2. There came the holy women With spices and with tears; The angels tried to comfort them, But could not calm their fears. Came Mary to that garden: And sobbed with heart forlorn; She thought she heard the gard'ner ask: "Whom seekest thou this morn?" 3. She heard her own name spoken, And then she lost her care; All in his strength and loveliness The risen Lord stood fair! Good Joseph had a garden; Amid its trees so tall The Lord Christ stood on Sunday morn: He lives to save us all. 4. And as he rose on Sunday, He is alive always, The very same Lord Jesus Christ Who hears us sing today. Go tell the Lord Christ's message, The Paschal triumph sing, Till all his waiting children know That Jesus is their King. Topics: Resurrection Scripture: John 20:1-18 Used With Tune: ANGELS' STORY

How Long Wilt Thou Forget Me

Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 10 hymnals Lyrics: 1 How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord, thou God of grace? How long shall fears beset me, while darkness hides thy face? How long shall griefs distress me and turn my day to night? How long shall foes oppress me and triumph in their might? 2 O Lord my God, behold me, and hear my earnest cries; lest sleep of death enfold me, enlighten thou mine eyes; lest now my foe insulting should boast of his success, and enemies exulting rejoice in my distress. 3 But I with expectation have on thy grace relied; my heart in thy salvation shall still with joy confide; and I with voice of singing will praise the Lord above, who, richest bounties bringing, has dealt with me in love. Lord God of Hosts in Mercy

Author: Anonymous Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 8 hymnals First Line: Lord God of hosts, in mercy Lyrics: 1. Lord God of hosts, in mercy My supplication hear; Almighty and all faithful, Our fathers’ God, give ear. Our Shield and great Defender, No longer hide Thy face, But look upon Thy servant, Anointed by Thy grace. 2. In Thy blest courts to worship, My God, a single day Is better than a thousand While far from Thee I stray. Though in a lowly station, The service of my Lord I choose above all pleasures That sinful ways afford. 3. A sun and shield forever Is God, the Lord Most High, To those who walk uprightly No good will He deny. His saints, His grace receiving, Shall soon His glory see; O Lord of hosts, most blessèd Are they that trust in Thee. Where'er His Creatures Gather

Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 6 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Where'er His creatures gather the unseen God is near; let rulers fear their Ruler, their Judge let judges fear. How long, ye earthly judges, will ye pervert the right? How long shall wicked persons have favor in your sight? 2 Do justice for the helpless, the orphan's cause maintain. Defend the poor and needy, oppressed and wronged for gain. When rulers walk in darkness, when judges truth forsake, the cornerstones are crumbled, the firm foundations shake. 3 The Most High God has called you and set you up on high, but ye to Him must answer, for ye like men must die. Arise, O God Eternal, Thou Judge of all the earth, through all Thy ransomed nations send now Thy justice forth. O Christ, Thy love Unbounded

Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O Christ, Thy love unbounded, So full, so sweet, so free, Leaves all our thoughts confounded, Whene'er we think of Thee. For us Thou cam'st from heaven, For us didst bleed and die, That, ransomed and forgiven, We might ascend on high. 2 We know that Thou hast bought us, And washed us in Thy blood: We know Thy grace hath brought us As kings and priests to God. We know the blessèd morning, Long looked for, draweth near, When we, at Thy returning, In glory shall appear. 3 O let Thy love constrain us To give our hearts to Thee; Let nothing please or pain us, Apart, O Lord, for Thee; Our joy, our one endeavor, Through suffering, conflict, shame, To serve Thee, gracious Saviour, And magnify Thy Name. Amen. Topics: Way of Salvation Sanctification; Trinity, Ninth Sunday; Trinity, Nineteenth Sunday; Christ Work of Used With Tune: ANGEL'S STORY (NORWICH) Text Sources: Bosworth's Hymns, 1865
