Frank M. Davis

Born at Marcellus, NY, he became a teacher and professor of voice, a choirmaster and a good singer. He traveled extensively, living in Marcellus, NY, Vicksburg, MS, Baltimore, MD, Cincinnati, OH, Burr Oak and Findley, MI. He compiled and published several song books: “New Pearls of Song” (1877), “Notes of Praise” (1890), “Crown of gold” (1892), “Always welcome” (1881), “Songs of love and praise #5” (1898), “Notes of praise”, and “Brightest glory”. Will L. Thompson

1847 - 1909 Composer of "[Fling out the banner! let it float]" in The New Century Hymnal Will Lamartine Thompson (1847-1909) Born: November 7, 1847, East Liverpool, Ohio. Died: September 20, 1909, New York, New York. Buried: Riverview Cemetery, East Liverpool, Ohio. Rebuffed in an early attempt to sell his songs to a commercial publisher, Thompson started his own publishing company. He later expanded, opening a store to sell pianos, organs and sheet music. Both a lyricist and composer, he ensured he would always remember words or melodies that came to him at odd times: "No matter where I am, at home or hotel, at the store or traveling, if an idea or theme comes to me that I deem worthy of a song, I jot it down in verse. In this way I never lose it." Thompson took ill during a tour of Europe, and his family cut short their travels to return home. He died a few weeks later. John Frederick Wolle

1863 - 1933 Person Name: J. Fred Wolle Composer of "PALMARUM" in The Hymnal of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America 1940 Born Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, April 4, 1863. Graduated from the Moravian Parochial School in 1879, and began teaching in Bethlehem. Organist of Trinity Church, Philadelphia (1881-84) and a student there under David D. Wood. Studied with Rheinberger in Munich, 1884-85, and after returning to America was organist of the Packer Memorial Church at Lehigh University (1887-1905). Organized the first choral societies in Bethlehem and Easton. With the Bethlehem society, presented the first complete performance of Bach's St. John Passion in 1888, the St. Matthew Passion in 1892, and the B-minor Mass in 1900. In 1905, moved to California, where he taught at the University of California (1905-11) and was organist of the First Congregational Church, Berkeley (1907-9). Returned to Bethlehem in 1911, resumed administration of the Bach Choir, and was organist at the Salem Lutheran Church. He died in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on his seventieth birthday, April 4, 1933. Lissant was a chorister at the coronation of Britain’s Queen Victoria. In 1849, he became the first organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Calcutta, India.
