Edward Bunnett

1834 - 1923 Person Name: E. Bunnett Composer of "ST. GREGORY" in The Church Hymnary Edward Bunnet Canada 1834-1923. Born at Shipdham and educated at Norwich Cathedral Choir School, he was a talented chorister, composer, a brilliant organist, and had a sharp sense of humour. He married Emma Elizabeth McGowan in 1890, and they had three children. He became assistant organist at Norwich Cathedral for 22 years and later at St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich, for another 31 years. He was organist for the Norwich triennial Musical Festival for 33 years. Over his life he taught thousands of young people how to play the organ. He composed 16 choral works. John Perry

Joseph Barnby

1838 - 1896 Person Name: Sir Joseph Barnby Composer of "ST. ANSELM" in The Evangelical Hymnal Joseph Barnby (b. York, England, 1838; d. London, England, 1896) An accomplished and popular choral director in England, Barnby showed his musical genius early: he was an organist and choirmaster at the age of twelve. He became organist at St. Andrews, Wells Street, London, where he developed an outstanding choral program (at times nicknamed "the Sunday Opera"). Barnby introduced annual performances of J. S. Bach's St. John Passion in St. Anne's, Soho, and directed the first performance in an English church of the St. Matthew Passion. He was also active in regional music festivals, conducted the Royal Choral Society, and composed and edited music (mainly for Novello and Company). In 1892 he was knighted by Queen Victoria. His compositions include many anthems and service music for the Anglican liturgy, as well as 246 hymn tunes (published posthumously in 1897). He edited four hymnals, including The Hymnary (1872) and The Congregational Sunday School Hymnal (1891), and coedited The Cathedral Psalter (1873). Bert Polman

1830 - 1926 Person Name: A. H. Brown (1830- ) Composer of "HOLY CHURCH" in The Hymnal of Praise Born: Ju­ly 24, 1830, Brent­wood, Es­sex, Eng­land. Died: Feb­ru­a­ry 15, 1926, Brent­wood, Es­sex, Eng­land. Almost com­plete­ly self taught, Brown be­gan play­ing the or­gan at the age 10. He was or­gan­ist of the Brent­wood Par­ish Church, Es­sex (1842-53); St. Ed­ward’s, Rom­ford (1853-58); Brent­wood Par­ish Church (1858-88); St. Pe­ter’s Church, South Weald (from 1889); and Sir An­tho­ny Browne’s School (to 1926). A mem­ber of the Lon­don Gre­gor­i­an As­so­ci­a­tion, he helped as­sem­ble the Ser­vice Book for the an­nu­al fes­tiv­al in St. Paul’s Ca­thed­ral. He sup­port­ed the Ox­ford Move­ment, and pi­o­neered the res­tor­a­tion of plain­chant and Gre­gor­i­an mu­sic in Ang­li­can wor­ship. Brown ed­it­ed var­i­ous pub­li­ca­tions, in­clud­ing the Al­tar Hym­nal. His other works in­clude set­tings of the Can­ti­cles and the Ho­ly Com­mun­ion Ser­vice, a Child­ren’s Fes­tiv­al Serv­ice, an­thems, songs, part songs, and over 800 hymn tunes and car­ols. 1834 - 1900 Person Name: Uzziah C. Burnap Composer of "TENNENT" in The Hymnal for Youth Burnap ran a dry goods bus­iness in Brook­lyn, though he grad­u­at­ed from the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Par­is with a mu­sic de­gree, and for 37 years played the or­gan at the Re­formed Church in Brook­lyn Heights. He was a pro­li­fic com­pos­er, and helped ed­it the fol­low­ing: Hymns of the Church, 1869 Hymns of Pray­er and Praise, 1871 Hymns and Songs of Praise, 1874 --The Cyber Hymnal™ There is uncertainty about his middle name. Reynolds and the Library of Congress say it was Christopher. A contemporary obituary relied on by "The Cyber Hymnal™" says it was Cicero. It appears that there was another Uzziah C[icero] Burnap who lived (per LOC) 1794-1854.
