Robert G. McCutchan

1877 - 1958 Composer of "ALL THE WORLD" in Trinity Hymnal (Rev. ed.) A noted hymnologist, McCutchan studied at Park College, Parkville, Missouri, and Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa (BM 1904). He went on to teach voice at Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas, and founded the conservatory of music there in 1910. After further study in Germany and France, in 1911 he became dean of music at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, serving there 26 years. He helped compile the Methodist Hymnal in 1936. Paul Liljestrand

1931 - 2011 Composer of "CONRAD" in The Worshiping Church Dr. Paul Frederick Liljestrand was born May 15, 1931 in Montclair, NJ, died Feb 17, 2011 in Thomasville, GA. His musical gifts were recognized at an early age and he studied at The Julliard School, beginning in the Pre-College Division and continuing through the Master's Degree program. He spent two years in Japan with the U.S. Army, serving as a Chaplain's Assistant. Following this he returned to New Jersey and studied at Union Theological Seminary for a Master's Degree in Sacred Music. He also served as organist and choir director at Brookdale Baptist Church for 9 years before being called to Calvary Baptist Church in New York City where he served for thirty years. He also taught and was Chairman of the Music Department at both Northeastern Bible College and Nyack College. As the director of the Nyack Chorale, he led his students on many tours. After retiring from Calvary Baptist Church he was organist and choir director at Union Congregational Church in Montclair, NJ for nine years. In 2003 he and his wife moved to Thomasville, GA where Liljestrand became organist and choir director at St. Thomas Episcopal Church and later was Music Director at Trinity Anglican Church. Both in New Jersey and in Georgia, Liljestrand served as accompanist for many groups and professional musicians, taught piano, organ, and composition, and was a mentor to many young musicians. 1861 - 1925 Composer of "WILTON" in Songs of the Christian Life Born: August 8, 1861, Clevedon, Somerset, England. Died: Circa August 1925, Hampstead, England. Button’s father was master of a private school, and excelled as an organist. Elliot was a self taught musician, and besides being solo alto at Holy Trinity Church, Upper Chelsea, was a pianist, organist, and violinist. He was also at one time was an editor for the Novello publishing company. He harmonized a number of tunes in The Primitive Methodist Hymnal Supplement with Tunes (London: Primitive Methodist Publishing House, 1912), and edited the third series of the Bristol Tune Book. James Vila Blake

1842 - 1925 Person Name: J. V. B. Composer of "[Let all the world in every corner sing]" in The Morning Stars Sang Together Blake, James Vila. (Brooklyn, New York, January 21, 1842--April 28, 1925, Chicago, Illinois). He graduated from Harvard College in 1862 and from Harvard Divinity School in 1866, and served Unitarian churches in Massachusetts and Illinois, his last and longest pastorate being at Evanston, Illinois, 1892-1916. Author of a number of books. He shared with W.G. Gannett and F.L. Hosmer in the compilation of the first edition of Unity Hymns and Chorals, (1880), which included his hymn, "Father, Thou art calling, calling to us plainly," included also in The New Hymn and Tune Book, 1914, and in Hymns of the Spirit, 1937. the latter book also includes his hymn of the church universal, "O sing with loud and joyful song." --Henry Wilder Foote, DNAH Archives
