Here In Thy Name, Eternal God

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 106 hymnals First Line: Here, in Thy name, eternal God Lyrics: 1 Here in Thy name, eternal God, We build this earthly house to Thee; O choose it for Thy fixed abode And keep it from all error free. 2 Here, when Thy people seek Thy face And dying sinners pray to live, Hear Thou in heav'n, Thy dwelling place, And when Thou hearest, Lord, forgive. 3 Here, when Thy messengers proclaim The blessed Gospel of Thy Son, Still, by the pow'r of His great name, Be mighty signs and wonders done. 4 Thy glory never hence depart; Yet choose not, Lord, this house alone; Thy kingdom come to ev'ry heart; In ev'ry bosom fix Thy throne. Amen. Topics: Dedication Used With Tune: ALSTONE

As When The Weary Traveler Gains

Author: John Newton Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 205 hymnals Lyrics: 1 As when the weary traveler gains The height of some o’erlooking hill; His heart revives, if cross the plains He eyes his home, though distant still. 2 While he surveys the much loved spot, He slights the space that lies between; His past fatigues are now forgot, Because his journey’s end is seen. 3 Thus, when the Christian pilgrim views By faith, his mansion in the skies; The sight his fainting strength renews, And wings his speed to reach the prize. 4 The thought of home his spirit cheers, No more he grieves for troubles past; Nor any future trial fears, So he may safe arrive at last. 5 Tis there, he says, I am to dwell With Jesus, in the realms of day; Then I shall bid my cares farewell, And He will wipe my tears away. 6 Jesus, on Thee our hope depends, To lead us on to Thine abode; Assured our home will make amends For all our toil while on the road. Why Did the Jews Proclaim Their Rage?

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 20 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Why did the Jews proclaim their rage? The Romans, why their swords employ? Against the Lord their powers engage, His dear Anointed to destroy? 2. Come, let us break his bands, they say; This man shall never give us laws: And thus they cast His yoke away, And nailed the monarch to the cross. 3. But God, who high in glory reigns, Laughs at their pride, their rage controls; He’ll vex their hearts with inward pains, And speak in thunder to their souls. 4. I will maintain the king I made On Zion’s everlasting hill; My hand shall bring Him from the dead, And He shall stand your sovereign still. 5. His wondrous rising from the earth Makes His eternal Godhead known; The Lord declares His heav’nly birth— “This day I have begot My Son. 6. Ascend, My Son, to My right hand, There Thou shalt ask, and I bestow, The utmost bounds of heathen lands; To Thee the northern isles shall bow. 7. But nations that resist His grace Shall fall beneath His iron stroke; His rod shall crush His foes with ease, As potters’ earthen work is broke. 8. Now, ye that sit on earthly thrones, Be wise, and serve the Lord, the Lamb; Now at His feet submit your crowns, Rejoice and tremble at His name. 9. With humble love address the Son, Lest He grow angry, and ye die; His wrath will burn to worlds unknown, If ye provoke His jealousy. 10. His storms shall drive you quick to hell; He is a God, and ye but dust; Happy the souls that know Him well, And make His grace their only trust. Blessed Redeemer, How Divine

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 36 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Blessèd Redeemer, how divine How righteous is this rule of Thine! "To do to all men just the same" As we expect or wish from them. 2 This golden lesson, short and plain, Gives not the mind nor memory pain, And every conscience must approve This universal law of love. 3 How blessed would every nation be, Thus ruled by love and equity! All would be friends without a foe, And form a paradise below. 4 Jesus, forgive us, that we keep Thy sacred law of love asleep; No more let envy, wrath and pride, But Thy blessed maxims be our guide. Used With Tune: ALSTONE Text Sources: Hymns and Spiritual Songs, Book I, 1707
