To God, the Universal King

Author: Samuel Stennett Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 29 hymnals Lyrics: 1. To God, the universal King, Let all mankind their tribute bring; All that have breath! your voices raise, In songs of never ending praise. 2. The spacious earth on which we tread, And wider heavens stretched o’er our head, A large and solemn temple frame, To celebrate its Builder’s fame. 3. Here the bright sun, that rules the day, As through the sky he makes his way, To all the world proclaims aloud The boundless sovereignty of God. 4. When from his courts the sun retires, And with the day his voice expires, The moon and stars adopt the song, And through the night the praise prolong. 5. The listening earth with rapture hears Th’harmonious music of the spheres; And all her tribes the notes repeat, That God is wise, and good and great. 6. But man, endowed with nobler powers, His God in nobler strains adores; His is the gift to know the song, As well as sing with tuneful tongue. The Heavens Declare Thy Glory, Lord

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 600 hymnals First Line: The heav'ns declare thy glory, Lord Lyrics: 1 The heav'ns declare Thy glory, Lord, in ev'ry star Thy wisdom shines; but when our eyes behold Thy Word, we read Thy name in fairer lines. 2 The rolling sun, the changing light, and night and day, Thy pow'r confess; but the blest volume Thou hast writ reveals Thy justice and Thy grace. 3 Sun, moon, and stars convey Thy praise 'round the whole earth, and never stand; so when Thy truth began its race, it touched and glanced on ev'ry land. 4 Nor shall Thy spreading gospel rest 'til through the world Thy truth has run; 'til Christ has all the nations blessed, that see the light, or feel the sun. 5 Great Sun of Righteousness, arise, bless the dark world with heav'nly light: Thy gospel makes the simple wise; Thy laws are pure, Thy judgments right. 6 Thy nobl'st wonders here we view, in souls renewed, and sins forgiv'n; Lord, cleanse my sins, my soul renew, and make Thy Word my guide to heav'n. Topics: God the Father, Creator Adoration Scripture: Psalm 19:7-14 Used With Tune: CROMER
