Topics: Resurrección Scripture: John 20:1-18 Used With Tune: EBENEZER

The Ruler's Daughter

Author: John Newton Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 12 hymnals First Line: Could the creatures help or ease us Lyrics: 1 Could the creatures help or ease us Seldom should we think of prayer; Few, if any, come to Jesus Till reduced to self despair; Long we either slight or doubt Him, But when all the means we try Prove we cannot do without Him, Then at last to Him we cry. 2 Thus the ruler when his daughter Suffered much, though Christ was nigh, Still deferred it, till he thought her At the very point to die; Though he mourned for her condition, He did not entreat the Lord, Till he found that no physician But Himself, could help afford. 3 Jesus did not once upbraid him, That he had no sooner come; But a gracious answer made him, And went straightway with him home; Yet his faith was put to trial When his servants came and said, Though he gave thee no denial, ’Tis too late—the child is dead. 4 Jesus, to prevent his grieving, Kindly spoke and eased his pain; "Be not fearful, but believing, Thou shalt see her live again"; When He found the people weeping, "Cease," He said, "no longer mourn; For she is not dead, but sleeping"; Then they laughed Him to scorn. 5 O Thou meek and lowly Savior, How determined is Thy love! Not this rude, unkind behavior, Could Thy gracious purpose move; Soon as He the room had entered, Spoke, and took her by the hand; Death at once his prey surrendered, And she lived at His command. 6 Fear not then, distressed believer, Venture on His mighty name; He is able to deliver, And His love is still the same; Can His pity or His power Suffer thee to pray in vain? Wait but His appointed hour, And thy suit thou shalt obtain. Used With Tune: EBENEZER Text Sources: Olney Hymns (London, W. Oliver, 1779), Book 1

LORD, the God of My Salvation

Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 9 hymnals Lyrics: 1 LORD, the God of my salvation, day and night I cry to Thee; let my prayer now find acceptance, in Thy mercy answer me. Full of troubles and affliction, nigh to death my soul is brought helpless, like one cast forever from Thy care and from Thy thought. 2 Thou hast brought me down to darkness, 'neath Thy wrath I am oppressed; all the billows of affliction overwhelm my soul distressed. Thou hast made my friends despise me, and companionless I go, bound, and helpless in my bondage, pining in my bitter woe. 3 Unto Thee with hands uplifted daily I direct my cry; hear, O LORD, my supplication, hear and save me ere I die. Wilt Thou wait to show Thy wonders and Thy mercy to the dead? Let me live to tell Thy praises, by Thy lovingkindness led. Topics: Supplication Scripture: Psalm 88 Used With Tune: EBENEZER Text Sources: The Psalter, 1912

We believe in God the Father

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 8 hymnals Lyrics: 1 We believe in God the Father, God almighty, by whose plan earth and heaven sprang to being, all created things began. We believe in Christ the Saviour, Son of God in human frame, virgin-born, the child of Mary upon whom the Spirit came. 2 Christ, who on the cross forsaken, like a lamb to slaughter led, suffered under Pontius Pilate, he descended to the dead. We believe in Jesus risen, heaven's king to rule and reign, to the Father's side ascended till as judge he comes again. 3 We believe in God the Spirit; in one Church, below, above: saints of God in one communion, one in holiness and love. So by faith, our sins forgiven, Christ our Saviour, Lord and friend, we shall rise with him in glory to the life that knows no end. LORD, Thy Word to Me Remember

Meter: 8.7.8.7 Appears in 8 hymnals Lyrics: 1 LORD, Thy word to me remember, Thou hast made me hope in Thee; this my comfort in affliction that Thy Word hath quickened me. Mocked by those who are unrighteous, still to Thy commands I cleave; thinking on Thy former judgments, help and comfort I receive. 2 Wicked men Thy law forsaking, stirred my indignation strong; for in all my pilgrim journey Thy commandments are my song. Thou hast been my meditation and Thy law hath been my guide; I have kept Thy righteous precepts, and have found them true and tried. Topics: Instruction Scripture: Psalm 119:49-56 Used With Tune: EBENEZER Text Sources: Psalter, 1912
