Unto My Lord Jehovah Said

Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 7 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Unto my Lord Jehovah said, "At my right hand I throne you, till at your feet, in triumph laid, your foes their ruler own you." From Zion shall Jehovah send your scepter, till before you bend the knees of proud rebellion. 2 Your saints, to greet your day of might, in holy raiment muster; as dewdrops in the morning light your youths around you cluster. Jehovah swore and made decree, "You, King of Righteousness, shall be a royal Priest forever." 3 The Lord at your right hand shall bring on rulers desolation; the Lord shall smite each heathen king, and judge each rebel nation. He, swiftly marching in his wrath, shall quaff the brook upon his path, and lift his head in glory. Lord Jesus Christ, Thou Hast Prepared

Author: Samuel Kinner; Emmanuel Cronenwett Meter: 8.7.87.8.8.7 Appears in 5 hymnals Refrain First Line: Herr Jesu Christ, du hast bereit Lyrics: 1. Lord Jesus Christ, Thou hast prepared A feast for our salvation, It is Thy body and Thy blood; And at Thy invitation As weary souls, with sin oppressed, We come to Thee for needed rest, For comfort, and for pardon. 2. Although Thou didst to Heav’n ascend, Where angel hosts are dwelling, And in Thy presence they behold Thy glory, all excelling, And though Thy people shall not see Thy glory and Thy majesty Till dawns the Judgment morning. 3. Yet, Savior, Thou art not confined To any habitation, But Thou art present everywhere And with Thy congregation. Firm as a rock this truth shall stand, Unmoved by any daring hand Or subtle craft and cunning. 4. We eat this bread and drink this cup, Thy precious Word believing That Thy true body and Thy blood Our lips are here receiving. This word remains forever true, And there is naught Thou canst not do; For Thou, Lord, art almighty. 5. Though reason cannot understand Yet faith this truth embraces; Thy body, Lord, is everywhere At once in many places. How this can be I leave to Thee, Thy Word alone sufficeth me, I trust its truth unfailing. 6. Lord, I believe what Thou hast said, Help me when doubts assail me; Remember that I am but dust And let my faith not fail me. Thy supper in this vale of tears Refreshes me and stills my fears And is my priceless treasure. 7. Grant that we worthily receive Thy supper, Lord, our Savior, And, truly grieving o’er our sins, May prove by our behavior That we are thankful for Thy grace And day by day may run our race, In holiness increasing. 8. For Thy consoling supper, Lord, Be praised throughout all ages! Preserve it, for in every place The world against it rages. Grant that this sacrament may be A blessèd comfort unto me When living and when dying. Used With Tune: DU LIFVETS BRÖD Text Sources: Ohio Lutheran Hymnal, 1880, number 265, alt.

O Jesus Christ, Thou Bread of Life

Author: Johann Rist Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 4 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O Jesus Christ, thou Bread of Life, To sinners freely given Who of their evil ways repent, Cast out all earthly leaven, And graciously my heart prepare The Holy Supper now to share, With Thee in blest communion. 2 Deign to Thine altar, blessed Lord, By Thine own hand to lead me, There to renew Thy covenant, And with Thy gifts to feed me; O give me, in Thy flesh and blood, To taste and see that Thou are good; My soul refresh and quicken. 3 O give me strength to walk with Thee, And grace Thy steps to follow, Thus to fulfill the last of God, To Him my service hallow. Bless now Thy sacramental guest, Take Thine abode within my breast, And nevermore forsake me. 4 Cleanse me of all iniquity, Renew my heart within me; My soul so fully occupy That evil shall not win me. As Thou didst suffer on the cross, So teach Thy child to suffer loss, Through faith in Thee, my Saviour. 5 Thy grace, O God, I merit less Than strips of Thy chastising; In all my sins and dire distress I yet were agonizing, Save for the willing sacrifice Of Christ, who bought us with a price, And earned our full salvation. 6 Sore stricken, unto Thee I come, For grace and succor pleading, Mine eyes are blind; to Thee I turn For light and gentle leading. Whene'er I stumble, raise me up; When faint and famished, from Thy cup, Lord, tender me Thy healing! 7 Come, Saviour dear, with me abide, Thy love in me upwelling; O Holy Spirit, be my Guide, And make my heart Thy dwelling. In all my griefs my comfort be, Grant me that unity with Thee Which life nor death can sever. 8 Before Thy sacred table, Lord, My prayers grow faint and falter; Now make me worthy to partake The bounties of Thine altar. If one with Thee Thou make me there. I know that also I shall share With Thee the joy of heaven. Amen.
