A. Royce Eckhardt

b. 1937 Person Name: A. Royce Eckhardt, 1937- Arranger of "TILLFLYKT" in The Covenant Hymnal Royce Eckhardt has served as a director of music, organist, conductor, composer, arranger, hymnal editor, teacher, and hymnologist for over fifty years. He has served Evangelical Covenant churches as minister of music and organist in Seattle, New Britain (CT), Winnetka, and Hinsdale, Illinois, and also the Winnetka Presbyterian Church. Mr. Eckhardt earned a Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance in 1960 from North Park College, Chicago, and a Master of Music degree in liturgical music at Hartt College of Music, University of Hartford in 1972. Royce joined the music faculty at Seattle Pacific College in 1961, teaching organ, music theory and literature courses and directing small choral ensembles. He served as adjunct professor of church music at North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago, specializing in hymnology and also serving as chapel organist. Mr. Eckhardt was a member of the Covenant Hymnal Commission that produced The Covenant Hymnal (1973). In 1990 he was appointed to the Special Hymnal Commission that compiled and published The Covenant Hymnal: A Worshipbook (1996), serving as music editor. He is represented in the hymnal with 47 arrangements, original tunes, and descants. His many hymn arrangements, harmonizations and tunes appear in eight American hymnals. Royce also served as music director of the Covenant Ministers Chorus from 1985 to 2005, leading the Chorus on a concert tour to Sweden and Germany in 1990 and on a second concert tour in 2001 to Norway, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Germany. He has led many workshops and seminars throughout the country on worship and church music related topics, is a published composer of organ and choral works, a board member of North Shore American Guild of Organists, board member of The Bach Week Festival, and a member of The Hymn Society. V. S. S. Coles

1845 - 1929 Person Name: Vincent Tuckey Stratton Coles, 1845-1929 Author of "All Who Claim the Faith of Jesus" in Gather Comprehensive Coles, Vincent Stuckey Stratton, son of Rev. James Stratton Coles, born at Shepton Beauchamp, March 27, 1845, and educated at Balliol College, Oxford, graduating B.A. 1868, and M.A. 1872. On taking Holy Orders in 1869, he became Curato of Wantage. In 1872 he was preferred as Rector of Shepton-Beauchamp, Somerset, and in 1884 Librarian of the Pusey Library, Oxford. Mr. Coles has contributed the following hymns to Hymns Ancient & Modern, and the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge Church Hymns. 1. Lord, in whose eternal counsels. For guidance and growth in holiness. It was first printed as a leaflet, written for E. C. U. Festival, c. 1870; and then included, after revision, in S. P. C. K. Church Hymns, 1871. 2. Most Holy Father, bending low. Lent. No. 45 in the Bucharistic Hymnal, 1877. 3. 0 Lamb of God, whose love divine. Martyrs ( Virgins). Given in the Appendix to Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1868. 4. O Shepherd of the sheep. Martyrs (Bishop). Also given in the Appendix to Hymns Ancient & Modern 1868. 5. We pray Thee, heavenly Father. Preparation for Holy Communion. Originally written for a Communicants' class, it was included in S. P. C. K. Church Hymns, 1871, and in the revised Hymns Ancient & Modern 1875. 6. Lord, I cannot seek Thee. Spiritual Communion. Recently additional hymns by Mr. Coles have come into common use, including:— 1. Almighty Father, Lord most high. [Holy Communion.] Written for Hymns Ancient & Modern and given in the 1904 edition, No. 264, to be sung "At the Offertory." It is admirably suited for the purpose. 2. Father, Whose love we have wrong'd by transgression. This "Litany for Lent," in Hymns Ancient & Modern 1904, No. 633, is a cento from the author's Metrical Litany, published by Novello. The Pt. ii. in Hymns Ancient & Modern begins “Christ with the twelve the last Passover keeping." 3. We pray Thee, heavenly Father, p. 242, ii., 5. This hymn, with the exception of stanza i., is entirely rewritten in The English Hymnal, 1906. 4. Ye who own the faith of Jesus. [B. V. Christian Burke

1849 - 1944 Author of "Lord of Life and King of Glory" in Praise! Our Songs and Hymns Burke, Christian, was born in London Sept. 18, 1859, and now (1906) resides in Highgate, London. Her earlier verse, contributed to various periodicals, was collected as The Flowering of the Almond-Tree and other Poems, 1896, revised edition 1901. Her hymn “Lord of Life and King of Glory” [Mothers' Societies] was written in Dec. 1903, and first printed in the Treasury, Feb. 1901, p. 453, headed "Prize Hymn for a Mothers’ Union Service." Phillip E. Gregory

1886 - 1974 Person Name: Philip E. Gregory, 1886-1974 Author of "Jesus, Friend So Kind and Gentle" in The Covenant Hymnal Philip was born in Chelsea, London England in Feb 1886. He moved to the US in 1908, and became a Congregational Church minister. He appears to have served in Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and possibly also California. He married Harriet Thon of Steele MN, and had one son, Bruce. Philip died in Orange County CA on the 14th of June 1974, and is buried in Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona del Mar. ================ Rev. Phillip E.
