To Thee, O Jesus, Thanks Are Due

Author: V. Hjort Hymnal: Hymnal for Church and Home (2nd ed.) #393 (1928) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 To Thee, O Jesus, thanks are due: A mother dear, a father true, Thou unto me hast given. I learned from them the Word of life That saves the soul from sin and strife And shows the way to heaven. 2 Let lovingkindness be their meed And let Thy had supply their need And fill their hearts with gladness. Be Thou their comfort, strength, and stay When their declining years dismay And bring them pain and sadness. 3 In Thy pavilion hide them, Lord, And unto them Thy grace accord, With joy and peace surround them. Until from me Thou callest them Up to the new Jerusalem, With glorious life to crown them. Topics: Sunday School Hymns Prayer Languages: English Tune Title: [To Thee, O Jesus, thanks are due]

Christ, The Life Of All The Living

Author: Catherine Winkworth; Ernst Christoph Homburg Hymnal: American Lutheran Hymnal #400 (1930) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 Christ, the Life of all the living, Christ, the Death of death our foe, Who, Thyself for me once giving To the darkest depths of woe, Madest reconciliation And didst save me from damnation: Praise and glory ever be, Blessed Jesus, unto Thee. 2 Thou, O Christ, hast taken on Thee Bonds and stripes, a cruel rod; Pain and scorn were heaped upon Thee, 0 Thou sinless Son of God! Thus didst Thou my soul deliver From the bonds of sin forever. Praise and glory ever be, Blessed Jesus, unto Thee. 3 Heartless scoffers did surround Thee, Treating Thee with cruel scorn, E'en with piercing thorns they crowned Thee; All disgrace Thou, Lord, hast borne, That as Thine Thou mightest own me And with heav'nly glory crown me. Praise and glory ever be, Blessed Jesus, unto Thee. 4 Thou hast suffered men to bruise Thee, That from pain I might be free; Falsely did Thy foes accuse Thee-- Thence I gain security; Comfortless once Thou didst languish, Me to comfort in my anguish. Praise and glory ever be, Blessed Jesus, unto Thee. Topics: The Church Year Passion Languages: English Tune Title: GOTHA

Christians, Come, in Sweetest Measures

Author: Adam of St. Victor, d. 1172; R. Campbell, 1814-68 Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary #411 (1996) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 Christians, come, in sweetest measures Sing of those who spread the treasures In the holy Gospels shrined; Blessed tidings of salvation, Peace on earth their proclamation, Love from God to lost mankind. 2 See the rivers four that gladden With their streams the better Eden, Planted by our Savior dear. Christ the Fountain, these the waters. Drink, O Zion’s sons and daughters; Drink and find salvation here. 3 Here our souls, by Jesus sated, More and more shall be translated Earth’s temptations far above; Freed from sin’s abhorred dominion, Soaring on angelic pinion, They shall reach the Source of love. 4 Then shall thanks and praise ascending For Thy mercies without ending Rise to Thee, O Savior blest. With Thy gracious aid defend us, Let Thy guiding light attend us, Bring us to Thy place of rest. Topics: Heavenly Riches; Trinity 1 Languages: English Tune Title: ALLES IST AN GOTTES SEGEN

All Depends on Our Possessing

Author: Catherine Winkworth, 1829-78 Hymnal: Lutheran Worship #415 (1982) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 All depends on our possessing God's free grace and constant blessing, Though all earthly wealth depart. They who trust with faith unshaken By their God are not forsaken And will keep a dauntless heart. 2 He who to this day has fed me And to many joys has led me Is and ever shall be mine. He who did so gently school me, He who daily guides and rules me Will remain my help divine. 3 Many spend their lives in fretting Over trifles and in getting Things that lack all solid ground. I shall strive to win a treasure That will bring me lasting pleasure And that now is seldom found. 4 When with sorrow I am stricken, Hope anew my heart will quicken, All my longing shall be stilled. To his loving-kindness tender Soul and body I surrender, For on God alone I build. 5 Well he knows what best to grant me; All the longing hopes that haunt me, Joy and sorrow, have their day. I shall doubt his wisdom never; As God wills, so be it ever; I commit to him my way. 6 If my days on earth he lengthen, God my weary soul will strengthen; All my trust in him I place. Earthly wealth is not abiding, Like a stream away is gliding; Safe I anchor in his grace. Topics: Trust Languages: English Tune Title: ALLES IST AN GOTTES SEGEN

Upward where the stars are burning

Author: Rev. Horatius Bonar Hymnal: The Hymnal #428 (1950) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 Upward where the stars are burning, Silent, silent in their turning Round the never-changing pole; Upward where the sky is brightest, Upward where the blue is lightest, Lift I now my longing soul. 2 Where the Lamb on high is seated, By ten thousand voices greeted, Lord of lords, and King of kings. Son of Man, they crown, they crown Him, Son of God, they own, they own Him; With His Name the palace rings. 3 Blessing, honor, without measure, Heavenly riches, earthly treasure, Lay we at His blessed feet; Poor the praise that now we render, Loud shall be our voices yonder, When before His throne we meet. Amen. Topics: The Life Everlasting; Aspiration; Christ Praise to Christ; Eternal Life; Funeral Services; Heaven; Immortal Life Tune Title: BONAR

Oh, Blessed Home Where Man and Wife

Author: Magnus B. Landstad, 1802-80; Ole T. Arneson, 1853-1917 Hymnal: Lutheran Worship #466 (1982) Meter: 8.8.7.8.8.7 Lyrics: 1 Oh, blessed home where man and wife Together lead a godly life, By deeds their faith confessing! There many happy days are spent, There Jesus gladly will consent To tarry with his blessing. 2 If they have given him their heart, The place of honor set apart For him each night and morrow, Then he the storms of life will calm, Will bring for every wound a balm, And change to joy their sorrow. 3 And if their home be dark and drear, The cruse be empty, hunger near, All hope within them dying, Let them despair not in distress; See, Christ is there the bread to bless, The fragments multiplying. 4 O Lord, we come before your face; In ev'ry home bestow your grace On children, father, mother. Relieve their wants, their burdens ease, Let them together dwell in peace And love to one another. Topics: The Christian Home Languages: English Tune Title: KOMMT HER ZU MIR
