Trust and confidence; or, looking beyond present appearances

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 175 hymnals Topics: Graces of the Spirit Trust; Confidence in God; Fears and doubts removed; Trust in God under trials First Line: Away my unbelieving fear Lyrics: 1 Away, my unbelieving fear! Let fear to me no more take place! My savior doth not yet appear, He hides the brightness of his face: But shall I therefore let him go, And basely to the tempter yield? No, in the strength of Jesus no! I never will give up the shield. 2 Altho' the vine its fruits deny, Altho' the olive yield no oil, The withering fig-tree droop and die, The field illude the tiller's toil; The empty stall no herd afford, And perish all the bleating race; Yet I will triumph in the Lord, The God of my salvation praise. 3 Away, each unbelieving fera, Let Fear to cheering hope give place; My Savior will at length appear, And shew the brightness of his face: Tho now my prospects all be crost, My blooming hopes cut off I see, Still will I in my Jesus trust, Whose boundless love can reach to me. 4 In hope, believing against hope, His promis'd mercy will I claim, His gracious word shall bear me up, To seek salvation in his name: Sure, my dear Savior, bring it nigh! My soul shall then outstrip the wind, On wings of love mount up on high, And leave the world and sin behind. Scripture: Habakkuk 3:17-18

You Righteous, in the Lord Rejoice

Meter: 8.8.6 D Appears in 3 hymnals Topics: Fear of God Lyrics: 1 You righteous, in the Lord rejoice; it well becomes the good man's voice to sing Jehovah's praise. With harp and hymn of gladness sing, your gift of sweetest music bring, to him a new song raise. 2 For upright is Jehovah's word; and all the doings of the Lord in faithfulness are wrought. In justice and in judgment right the Lord does ever take delight; with goodness earth is fraught. 3 Jehovah's word the heav'ns has made, and all the host of them arrayed his breath has caused to be. He rolls the waters heap on heap; he stores away the mighty deep in garners of the sea. 4 Let all the earth Jehovah fear, let all that dwell both far and near in awe before him stand; for, lo, he spoke and it was done, and all, with sovereign pow'r begun, stood fast at his command. 5 He makes the nations' counsels vain, the plans the peoples would maintain are thwarted by his hand. Jehovah's counsel stands secure, his purposes of heart endure, forevermore they stand. 6 O truly is the nation blessed whose God, before the world confessed, Jehovah is alone; and blessed the people are whom he has made his heritage to be, and chosen for his own. Scripture: Psalm 33:1-12 Used With Tune: OLD 113TH Text Sources: compiled from several sources; mod.

Thy mercy, Lord, extend to me

Appears in 1 hymnal Topics: Prayers When zealous for the Knowledge and Fear of God Lyrics: 1 Thy Mercy, Lord, extend to me, As thou wert ever kind; Let me, oppress'd with Loads of guilt, Thy wonted Mercy find: Wash off my foul Offence, And cleanse me from my Sin; For I confess my Crime, and see How very great my Guilt hath been. 2 Against thee, O my GOD, alone, And only in thy Sight, Have I transgress'd, and tho' condemn'd, Must own thy Judgment right: In Guilt each Part was form'd, Of all this sinful Frame; In Sin I was conceiv'd and born, The hapless Heir of Guilt and Shame. 3 Yet thou, whose ever searching Eye, Does inward Truth require, In secret did'st with Wisdom's Laws My tender Soul inspire. With Hyssop purge me, LORD, And so I clean shall be; I shall with Snow in Whiteness vie, When wahs'd and purify'd by thee. 4 Make me, O LORD, to hear with Joy, Thy kind forgiving Voice; That so the Bones which thou hast broke, May with fresh Strength rejoice. Blot out my crying Sins, Nor me in Anger view; Create in me a Heart that's clean, A just and upright Mind renew. Part II 5 Withdraw not thou thy Help, O LORD! Nor cast me from thy Sight; Nor let thy Holy Spirit take Its everlasting Flight. The Joy thy Favour gives, Let me again obtain; And thy free Spirit's firm Support, My feeble fainting Soul sustain. 6 So I thy just and righteous Ways To Sinners will impart; Whilst my Advice shall wicked Men, To thy just Laws convert. My Guilt of Blood remove, My Saviour and my GOD; And my glad Tongue shall loudly tell, Thy Truth and righteous Acts abroad. 7 Do thou, O LORD, unlock my Lips, With Sorrow clos'd, and Shame; So shall my Mouth thy wond'rous Praise, To all the World proclaim. Could Sacrifice atone, Whole Flocks and Herds should die; But on such Off'rings, LORD, thou do'st Disdain to cast a gracious Eye. 8 A humble Spirit is alone, By GOD most highly priz'd; By him a contrite broken Heart, Shall never be despis'd. Let Sion ever be Of thy good Will assur'd; Let thy own City flourish long, By strong and lofty Walls secur'd. 9 'Tis there the Righteous shall attend, And pleasing Tribute pay; And Sacrifice of choicest Kind, Upon thy Altar lay. Scripture: Psalm 51 Used With Tune: [Thy mercy, Lord, extend to me]
