Born at Norwich, Norfolk, England, he graduated from New College, Oxford. He married Sarah Ransford, and they had five children: Sarah, Francis, Arthur, John, and Mary. Arthur died in infancy. Mann was a chorister and assistant organist at Norwich Cathedral, then, after short stints playing the organ at St Peter’s, Wolverhampton (1870-71); St. Michael’s Tettenhall Parish Church (1871-75); and Beverley Minster (1875-76); he became organist at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge (1876-1929), Cambridge University organist (1897-1929), and music master and organist at the Leys School, Cambridge (1894-1922). In addition to composing an oratorio and some hymn tunes, he was music editor of the Church of England Hymnal (1894). In 1918 he directed the music and first service of “Nine lessons & carols” at King’s College Chapel. He was an arranger, author, composer, and editor. His wife, Sarah, died in 1918. Sylvia G. Dunstan

Margaret Pleasant Douroux

Douroux Topics: Year C Proper 25 Author of "Give Me a Clean Heart" in The New Century Hymnal Margaret Pleasant Douroux (b 21 March 1941, Los Angeles, CA), daughter of Earl Amos Pleasant (1918–1974) and Olga Mae Williams (1920–2006), one of six siblings. Earl was a singer who toured with Mahalia Jackson before he became the founder (1945) and longtime pastor of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Inglewood, CA. Olga was an accompanist; Margaret likewise took an interest in music, playing piano for Sunday School classes until she was able to play for adult choirs. Through her father’s musical connections, she met influential gospel musicians such as Mahalia Jackson, Joe May, Sallie Martin, Thurston Frazier, and James Cleveland. In 1963, she married Donald Douroux, and they had one daughter, Mardy. She earned a degree in music from Cal State L.A. (1963), plus master’s degrees from the University of Southern California (1968, 1973), and a doctorate from the University of Beverly Hills (1979). After the death of her father, she joined her brother Earl in starting Greater New Bethel Baptist Church in Inglewood, California (1976). At the time, she was a school psychologist for Los Angeles City Schools. She had previously worked as an elementary school teacher and a guidance counselor. Magaret retired as music director of Greater New Bethel in 2015. Died: June 19, 1924, Oswestry, England. Buried: St. Andrew’s Church, Welsh Frankton, Ellesmere, Shropshire, England. Feilden graduated from Christ Church College, Oxford, in 1859, and in 1861 became assistant Curate at Whittington, Shropshire, under William How. In addition to his pastoral duties, Feilden was a keen botanist, and was president of the Offa Field Club (a local botanical group formed in 1888), and was responsible for much of the data and population work on wild flowers in the locality. His colleague Thomas Diamond published Flora of Oswestry, their account of the botany of the area, in 1891, though it seems Feilden was the botanist while Diamond was the collator. The book included the first recording of Mountain Everlasting (Antennaria dioica) on Llanymynech Hill, Juniper (Juniperus communis) at Carregybig and Creeping Willow (Salix repens) at Glopa. --www.hymntime.com/tch
