There's Joy In Heaven

Author: Silas W. Leonard Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 5 hymnals First Line: There’s joy in Heaven, thrilling joy Lyrics: 1 There’s joy in Heaven, thrilling joy, Whene’er a sinner turns; Then with a holy ecstasy, The tallest seraph burns: Through all the shining courts of bliss, The joyful news is borne, And thousand angel voices shout, The wanderer’s return. 2 There’s light, effulgent light in Heav’n It radiates from the throne, And bright reflects from golden streets And walls of precious stone: Ten thousand times ten thousand stars, And suns by scores untold, Could ne’er emit such glorious light, As there the saints behold. 3 There’s rest in Heaven, calm repose, From pain and toil and care: And there the weary shall enjoy A peace beyond compare. A tranquil quiet, calm and deep, A sea without a shore, An ocean vast, of bliss, that shall Endure for evermore. 4 There’s music, heav’nly music, there Ten thousand harps of gold Are tuned and touched by angel hands, To measures sweet and bold: Twelve thousand times twelve thousand souls Of their redemption sing; And louder yet, rank after rank, Redemption’s anthems ring. 5 They sing the wondrous love of God, That saved a sinful race; And thousand thousand angel choirs, Take up the notes of praise: And ransomed souls, a countless host, They echo swelling songs, Of honor, pow’r, and love to Him, To whom all praise belongs. Sing to the Lord No Threadbare Song

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr., b. 1944 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 2 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Sing to the Lord no threadbare song, no timeworn, toothless hymn, no sentimental platitude, no empty pious whim; but raise a song just off the loom, fresh woven, strong, and dense, as new as God's eternal now transcending time and sense. 2 Let earth's diverse, melodic tongues declare in telling phrase the glory of the only God who merits thanks and praise. All other hopes will disappoint, their brittle luster fade, but sure and strong remains the Lord by whom all things were made. 3 Heavens rejoice, and earth be glad! Exult, you roaring seas! Let fields and plains resound with joy that echoes from the trees! As nature sings, let people join and human discord cease, for God shall come to rule the world with justice, love, and peace. Our Common Home, This Planet Earth

Author: Barbara Hamm Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 Our common home, this planet earth, requires our common care. This gift of God is meant for all to use, protect and share. The earth supports a web of life in which we take our place; its food and water, air and light sustain the human race. 2 But now the earth is in distress from our pursuit of gain. If we consume our planet home, what profit will remain? If we ask more than earth can give and use more than we need, our common future is at risk, endangered by our greed. 3 What we do now affects the earth beyond the present day. Concern for those who follow us can help us find our way. God, help us bend our common will to right our common wrong that ages hence may sing your praise for earth, restored and strong. Topics: Earth Day; Global Used With Tune: COMMON CARE

The World Within

Author: Mary A. Lathbury Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: O wondrous world within a world Lyrics: 1. O wondrous world within a world How beautiful thou art! What high desire, what holy fire Lie glowing at thy heart! What beauty, like the silent stars, Hangs ever o’er thy brow; What youth, as old as Paradise, Springs deathless in thee now! 2. Where did we learn to love thy face— The music of thy name? A leafy door beside the shore Was opened—and we came. Our lost ideals, grown more fair, Thronged back through all thy ways; Another life—a real life— Filled all our empty days. 3. The world smiled, saying, These are they Who live among the trees; Whose thoughts rise higher than the stars And soar beyond the trees. They do not weigh their wealth with gold Or measure it with fame; They speak a language all their own They bear a hidden name. 4. So weighs the world its own true life, Nor knows it as its own, While, life of life, above all strife God waits upon His throne; He waits until the world of things And the world of thoughts shall be Blent in that perfect thing we call The new humanity. 5. What joy is thine, O world within, To bear thy banners out, And there to claim in God’s dear name The last and least redoubt! The earth is His—the heav’ns are His, He stooped to make them one When that great mystery was wrought That gave us God the Son. 6. The world without is blind to thee, Thou world of the within, Yet through the years thy saints and seers Its oracles have been. Still trust them with thy prophecies; Still through them breathe thy breath; Till honor blossoms from the dust And life spring out of death. Used With Tune: GERALD
