Wake, O wake, and sleep no longer

Author: Christopher Idle (born 1938); P. Nicolai (1556-1608) Appears in 9 hymnals Topics: God, Saviour Returning and Triumphant Lyrics: 1 Wake, O wake, and sleep no longer, for he who calls you is no stranger: awake, God's own Jerusalem! Hear, the midnight bells are chiming the signal for his royal coming: let voice to voice announce his name! We feel his footsteps near, the Bridegroom at the door — Alleluia! The lamps will shine with light divine as Christ the saviour comes to reign. 2 Zion hears the sound of singing; her heart is thrilled with sudden longing; she stirs, and wakes, and stands prepared. Christ her friend, and lord, and lover, her star and sun and strong redeemer — at last his mighty voice is heard. The Son of God has come To make with us his home: sing Hosanna! The fight is won, the feast begun; we fix our eyes on Christ alone. 3 Glory, glory, sing the angels, while music sounds from strings and cymbals; all humankind, with songs arise! Twelve the gates into the city, each one a pearl of shining beauty; the streets of gold ring out with praise. All creatures round the throne adore the holy One with rejoicing: Amen be sung by every tongue to crown their welcome to the King. Used With Tune: SLEEPERS, WAKE

Jesus all in all

Author: Ray Palmer Appears in 586 hymnals Topics: Love For the Saviour; Love For the Saviour First Line: Jesus, thou Joy of loving hearts Lyrics: 1 Jesus, thou Joy of loving hearts, Thou Fount of life! thou Light of men! From the best bliss that earth imparts, We turn unfilled to thee again. 2 Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood; Thou savest those that on thee call; To them that seek thee thou art good, To them that find thee, All in All. 3 We taste thee, O thou Loving Bread, And long to feast upon thee still; We drink of thee, the Fountain Head, And thirst our souls from thee to fill! 4 Our restless spirits yearn for thee, Where'er our changeful lot is cast; Glad, when thy gracious smile we see, Blest, when our faith can hold thee fast. 5 O Jesus, ever with us stay; Make all our moment calm and bright; Chase the dark night of sin away, Shed o'er the world thy holy light! Motives to Gratitude

Appears in 20 hymnals Topics: Christ The Saviour First Line: O come, my soul, bless thou the Lord thy Maker Refrain First Line: Bless Him, ye angels, wondrous in might Lyrics: 1 O come, my soul, bless thou the Lord thy Maker, And all within me, bless His holy Name; Bless thou the Lord, forget not all His mercies, His pard'ning grace and saving love proclaim. Refrain: Bless Him, ye angels, wondrous in might, Bless Him, His servants that in His will delight. 2 Good is the Lord and full of kind compassion, Most slow to anger, plenteous in love; Rich is His grace to all that humbly seek Him, Boundless and endless as the heav'ns above. [Refrain] 3 His love is like a father's to his children, Tender and kind to all who fear His Name; For well He knows our weakness and our frailty, He knows that we are dust, He knows our frame. [Refrain] 4 We fade and die like flow'rs that grow in beauty, Like tender grass that soon will disappear; But evermore the love of God is changeless, Still shown to those who look to Him in fear. [Refrain] 5 High in the heav'ns His throne is fixed forever, His kingdom rules o'er all from pole to pole; Bless ye the Lord through all His wide dominion, Bless His most holy Name, O thou my soul. [Refrain] Scripture: Psalm 103 Used With Tune: TUNBRIDGE

I cannot tell why he whom angels worship

Author: W. Y. Fullerton (1857-1932) Meter: 11.10.11.10.11.10.11.12 Appears in 38 hymnals Topics: God, Saviour Returning and Triumphant Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he whom angels worship should set his love upon the sons of men, or why as shepherd he should seek the wanderers to bring them back, they know not how nor when. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethlehem's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured; and so the saviour, saviour of the world, has come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted, and stays our sin and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burden from the heavy-laden; for still the saviour of the world, is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun shall shine in splendour when he the saviour, saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when at his bidding, every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when all our hearts with love for him are filled. But this I know, the skies will sound his praises, ten thousand thousand human voices sing, and earth to heaven, and heaven to earth, will answer, 'At last the saviour, saviour of the world is king!' Used With Tune: LONDONDERRY AIR

Thoughts for the Sanctuary

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 15 hymnals Topics: Christ The Saviour First Line: The glorious gates of righteousness Lyrics: 1 The glorious gates of righteousness Throw open unto me, And I will come to them with praise O Lord, my God, to Thee, And I will come to them with praise O Lord, my God, to Thee. 2 This is Thy temple gate, O Lord, The just shall enter there; My Saviour, I will give Thee thanks, O Thou that hearest prayer, My Saviour, I will give Thee thanks, O Thou that hearest prayer. 3 The stone rejected and despised Is now the cornerstone; How wondrous are the ways of God, Unfathomed and unknown! How wondrous are the ways of God, Unfathomed and unknown! 4 In this the day that Thou hast made Triumphantly we sing; Send now prosperity, O Lord, O Lord, salvation bring, Send now prosperity, O Lord, O Lord, salvation bring. 5 Hosanna! Ever blest be He That cometh in God's Name, The blessing of Jehovah's house Upon you we proclaim; The blessing of Jehovah's house Upon you we proclaim. 6 The light of joy to shine on us The Lord our God hath made; Now be the precious sacrifice Upon His altar laid, Now be the precious sacrifice Upon His altar laid. 7 O Lord, my God, I praise Thy Name, All other names above; O give Him thanks, for He is good And boundless is His love, O give Him thanks, for He is good And boundless is His love. Scripture: Psalm 118 Used With Tune: ZERAH
