Who Are These like Stars Appearing

Author: Heinrich T. Schenk; Frances Elizabeth Cox Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7 Appears in 150 hymnals Topics: The Way of Salvation The Resurrection and Everlasting Life Lyrics: 1 Who are these like stars appearing, these before God's throne who stand? Each a golden crown is wearing; who are all this glorious band? Alleluia! Hark, they sing, praising loud their heav'nly King. 2 Who are these of dazzling brightness, these in God's own truth arrayed, clad in robes of purest whiteness, robes whose lustre ne'er shall fade, ne'er be touched by time's rude hand? Whence come all this glorious band? 3 These are they who have contended for their Savior's honor long, wrestling on till life was ended, foll'wing not the sinful throng; these, who well the fight sustained, triumph through the Lamb have gained. 4 These are they whose hearts were riven, sore with woe and anguish tried, who in prayer full oft have striven with the God they glorified; now, their painful conflict o'er, God has bid them weep no more. 5 These like priests have watched and waited, off'ring up to Christ their will; soul and body consecrated, day and night to serve him still: now in God's most holy place blest they stand before his face. Scripture: Revelation 7:9 Used With Tune: ALL SAINTS OLD

How Bright These Glorious Spirits Shine!

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 161 hymnals Topics: The Way of Salvation The Resurrection and Everlasting Life First Line: How bright these glorious spirits shine Lyrics: 1 How bright these glorious spirits shine! Whence all their white array? How came they to the blissful seats of everlasting day? Lo! these are they from suff'rings great who came to realms of light! and in the blood of Christ have washed those robes which shine so bright. 2 Now, with triumphal palms, they stand before the throne on high, and serve the God they love, amidst the glories of the sky. His presence fills each heart with joy, tunes ev'ry mouth to sing: by day, by night, the sacred courts with glad hosannas ring. 3 Hunger and thirst are felt no more, nor suns with scorching ray; God is their sun, whose cheering beams diffuse eternal day. The Lamb which dwells amidst the throne shall o'er them still preside, feed them with nourishment divine, and all their footsteps guide. 4 'Mong pastures green he'll lead his flock where living streams appear; and God the Lord from ev'ry eye shall wipe off ev'ry tear. To him who sits upon the throne, the God whom we adore, and to the Lamb that once was slain, be glory evermore! Scripture: Revelation 7:13-17 Used With Tune: BETHLEHEM (FINK) Text Sources: Scottish Paraphrases, 1781

The Sands of Time Are Sinking

Author: Anne R. Cousin Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.5 Appears in 332 hymnals Topics: The Way of Salvation The Resurrection and Everlasting Life Lyrics: 1 The sands of time are sinking, the dawn of heaven breaks, the summer morn I've sighed for, the fair sweet morn awakes; dark, dark, hath been the midnight, but dayspring is at hand, and glory, glory dwelleth in Emmanuel's land. 2 The King there in his beauty without a veil is seen; it were a well-spent journey though sev'n deaths lay between: the Lamb with his fair army doth on Mount Zion stand, and glory, glory dwelleth in Emmanuel's land. 3 O Christ, he is the fountain, the deep sweet well of love! The streams on earth I've tasted more deep I'll drink above: there to an ocean fullness his mercy doth expand, and glory, glory dwelleth in Emmanuel's land. 4 The bride eyes not her garment, but her dear bridegroom's face; I will not gaze at glory, but on my King of grace; not at the crown he gifteth, but on his pierced hand: the Lamb is all the glory of Emmanuel's land. Scripture: Revelation 22:4 Used With Tune: RUTHERFORD Text Sources: Based upon Samuel Rutherford (1600-1661)

There Is a Land of Pure Delight

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,448 hymnals Topics: The Way of Salvation The Resurrection and Everlasting Life Lyrics: 1 There is a land of pure delight, where saints immortal reign; infinite day excludes the night, and pleasures banish pain. 2 There everlasting spring abides, and never-with'ring flow'rs; death, like a narrow sea, divides this heav'nly land from ours. 3 Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood stand dressed in living green; so to the Jews old Canaan stood, while Jordan rolled between. 4 But tim'rous mortals start and shrink to cross this narrow sea; and linger, shiv'ring, on the brink, and fear to launch away. 5 O could we make our doubts remove, those gloomy doubts that rise, and see the Canaan that we love with unbeclouded eyes; 6 Could we but climb where Moses stood, and view the landscape o'er, not Jordan's stream, nor death's cold flood, should fright us from the shore. Scripture: Deuteronomy 4:22 Used With Tune: MEDITATION

Deep are the wounds which sin has made

Author: Anne Steele Appears in 167 hymnals Topics: The Sinner Christ the Way of Life Lyrics: 1 Deep are the wounds which sin has made; Where shall the sinner find a cure? In vain, alas! is nature's aid; The work exceeds her utmost power. 2 But can no sovereign balm be found, And is no kind physician nigh, To ease the pain, and heal the wound, Ere life and hope forever fly? 3 There is a great Physician near; Look up, O fainting soul, and live; See, in his heavenly smiles appear Such help as nature cannot give. Immortal Love, for ever full

Author: J. G. Whittier, 1807-1892 Appears in 325 hymnals Topics: Christ Way, Truth, Life Lyrics: 1 Immortal Love, for ever full, For ever flowing free, For ever shared, for ever whole, A never-ebbing sea! 2 Our outward lips confess the name All other names above; Love only knoweth whence it came, And comprehendeth love. 3 Blow, winds of God, awake and blow The mists of earth away! Shine out, O Light Divine, and show How wide and far we stray! 4 We may not climb the heavenly steeps To bring the Lord Christ down; In vain we search the lowest deeps For Him no depths can drown. 5 And warm, sweet, tender, even yet A present help is He; And faith has still its Olivet, And love its Galilee. 6 The healing of His seamless dress Is by our beds of pain; We touch Him in life's throng and press, And we are whole again. 7 The letter fails, the systems fall, And every symbol wanes; The Spirit over-brooding all Eternal Love remains. Is this the kind return

Author: Isaac Watts Appears in 217 hymnals Topics: The Sinner Christ the Way of Life Lyrics: 1 Is this the kind return, Are these the thanks we owe, Thus to abuse eternal love, Whence all our blessings flow? 2 To what a stubborn frame Has sin reduced our mind! What strange rebellious wretches we, And God as strangely kind! 3 Turn, turn us, mighty God, And mold our souls afresh; Break, sovereign grace, these hearts of stone, And give us hearts of flesh. Lord, we are vile, and full of sin

Author: Isaac Watts Appears in 217 hymnals Topics: The Sinner Christ the Way of Life Lyrics: 1 Lord, we are vile, and full of sin, We're born unholy and unclean; Spring from the man whose guilty fall Corrupts his race, and taints us all. 2 Soon as we draw our infant breath The seeds of sin grow up for death; Thy law demands a perfect heart, But we're defiled in every part. 3 Behold, we fall before thy face; Our only refuge is thy grace: No outward forms can make us clean; The leprosy lies deep within. 4 Nor bleeding bird, nor bleeding beast, Nor hyssop branch, nor earthly priest, Nor running brook, nor flood, nor sea, Can wash the dismal stain away. 5 Jesus, thy blood, thy blood alone, Hath power sufficient to atone; Thy blood can make us white as snow; No other tide can cleanse us so. Used With Tune: WINDHAM
