The Divine Pilot

Author: Valdimar Briem; Charles Venn Pilcher Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: When winds far-blown from realms of pain Lyrics: When winds far-blown from realms of pain Lash sorrow's storm-waves high, Thou deemest, tossed on life's rough main, That death looms threatening by: Thou callest, "Christ, whose voice once curbed With power the raging deep, Where is Thy might? All-undisturbed Thou liest, O Lord, asleep." What though He seem to sleep? yea, e'en To slight thine anguished cries? Yield not to gaunt despair; serene Against the danger rise. He sleeps not. Nay! 'tis we that sleep: Untouched by slumber's power He watches. Would that we could keep Such watch with Him one hour! Behold Him rise in majesty! Shame on thy faithless fears! He stays the wind, He stills the sea, From off the rocks He steers. So watch, for 'tis Thy Lord's command, Thyself in calm or strife; For hard the task, and weak the hand, And short the course of life. Give heed to watch, give heed to pray, But scorn thy guilty fear, Though mighty billows night and day Their threatening crests uprear. What if untracked before thy face The watery wastes expand? The helm, through God's abounding grace, Lies in thy Saviour's hand. Midst black confusion of the storm, Midst moan of winds, He hears; And ever at the stern His Form, Majestic, God-like steers; Till onward past death's ice-bound strand, Where pain's wild breakers foam, He guides thee to that Blessed Land, Anchored in endless home.

I Sing to Thee

Author: P. Gerhardt Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 5 hymnals First Line: I sing to Thee with voice and heart Lyrics: 1. I sing to Thee with voice and heart, Of all my joys the well; I sing, that, what I know Thou art My lips to all may tell: That Thou a fountain art of grace, With blessings richly stored For all, in ev'ry time and place, This well I know, O Lord. 2. Cheer up, faint heart, rejoice and sing, All anxious fear resign; For God, the sov'reign Lord and King, Is Thy God, even thine: He is thy portion, He thy joy, Thy life, and light, and Lord; Thy counsellor when doubts annoy, Thy shield and great reward. 3. In restless thoughts or dark despair Why spend the day and night? On Him who loves thee cast thy care; He makes our burdens light: Did not His love, and truth, and pow'r Watch o'er thy childhood's day? Hath He not oft, in threat'ning hour, Turned dreaded ills away? 4. His wisdom never plans in vain, Ne'er falters, or mistakes; All that His counsels wise ordain A happy ending makes: Upon thy mouth, then, lay thy hand, And trust His guiding eye; Thus, firm as rock, thy feet shall stand, Now and eternally. When Jesus Came to Jericho

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 When Jesus came to Jericho, a crowd was waiting there. The rabbi’s miracles and deeds were now known everywhere. A tax collector climbed a tree to see above the crowd. The rabbi locked him in his gaze, then spoke his name aloud. 2 Zacchaeus, high up in the tree, looked down with great surprise, and saw his clear reflection in the rabbi’s knowing eyes. He saw himself possessed by greed, dishonest to the core, despised by friend and foe alike for always wanting more. 3 Ashamed, Zacchaeus hung his head, and would have turned away, except that Jesus said, “My friend, We must have lunch today!” Amazed, Zacchaeus raised his eyes to Jesus’ kindly face, and saw the love that welcomed him, redeeming him with grace. 4 From that day on, Zacchaeus vowed to change and make amends for all that he had stolen from his enemies and friends. Whenever someone was in need, he gladly did his part, and all who knew him marveled at his warm and giving heart. 5 Christ Jesus, come, call us by name, and hold us in your gaze, that we may also see and mourn the error of our ways, then joyfully receive your grace, enabling us to see and grow into the persons God envisioned us to be. Topics: Ansering God's Call; Repentance Scripture: Luke 19:5 Used With Tune: LENOIR-RHYNE
