I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship

Author: William Young Fullerton (1857-1932) Appears in 37 hymnals Topics: Fear Lyrics: 1 I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship, should set his love upon the sons of men, or why, as Shepherd, he should seek the wanderers, to bring them back, they know not how or when. But this I know, that he was born of Mary when Bethl'em's manger was his only home, and that he lived at Nazareth and laboured, and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is come. 2 I cannot tell how silently he suffered, as with his peace he graced this place of tears, or how his heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, he heals the broken-hearted and stays our sin and calms our lurking fear and lifts the burden from the heavy laden; for still the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here. 3 I cannot tell how he will win the nations, how he will claim his earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see his glory, and he shall reap the harvest he has sown, and some glad day his sun will shine in splendour when he the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is known. 4 I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when at his bidding every storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when every heart with love and joy is filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, and myriad myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav'n, and heav'n to earth, will answer, 'at last the Saviour, Saviour of the world, is King!' Scripture: Luke 2 Used With Tune: LONDONDERRY AIR

Witness-Bearing and Grateful Praise

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 10 hymnals Topics: Godly Fear Exhortation to First Line: Amid the thronging worshipers Lyrics: 1 Amid the thronging worshipers Jehovah will I bless; Before my brethren, gathered here His Name will I confess. Come, praise Him, ye that fear the Lord, Ye children of His grace; With rev'rence sound His glories forth And bow before His face. 2 The burden of the sorrowful The Lord will not despise; He has not turned from those that mourn, He hearkens to their cries. His goodness makes me join the throng Where saints His praise proclaim, And there will I fulfill my vows 'Mid those who fear His Name. 3 He feeds with good the humble soul And satisfies the meek, And they shall live and praise the Lord Who for His mercy seek. The ends of all the earth take tho't, The nations seek the Lord; They worship Him, the King of kings, In earth and heav'n adored. Scripture: Psalm 22 Used With Tune: BOVINA

When darkness long has veil'd my mind

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 125 hymnals Topics: Christian experience Doubts and Fears Lyrics: 1 When darkness long has vail'd my mind, And smiling day once more appears, Then, my Redeemer! then I find The folly of my doubts and fears. 2 I chide my unbelieving heart; And blush that I should ever be Thus prone to act so base a part, Or harbour one hard thought of thee! 3 O let me then at length be taught (What I am still so slow to learn,) That God is love, and changes not, Nor knows the shadow of a turn. 4 Sweet truth, and easy to repeat! But when my faith is sharply try'd I find myself a learner yet,-- Unskillful, weak, and apt to slide. 5 But, O my Lord, one look from thee Subdues the disobedient will; Drives doubt and discontent away, And thy rebellious worm is still. 6 Thou art as ready to forgive, As I am ready to repine; Thou, therefore, all the praise receive; Be shame, and self-abhorrence, mine.

How Lovely Is Your Dwelling

Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 14 hymnals Topics: Fear Lyrics: 1 How lovely is your dwelling, O Lord of hosts, to me; my soul is longing, fainting, the courts of God to see. The beauty of your dwelling will bring me joy anew. My heart and flesh are crying, O living God, for you. 2 Beneath your care the sparrow finds place for peaceful rest; to keep her young in safety the swallow finds a nest. So, Lord, my King Almighty, your love will shelter me; beneath your wings of mercy my dwelling place will be. 3 Blest they who love and serve you, whose joy and strength you are. Forever they will praise you, your ways are in their heart. Though tried, their tears like showers shall fill the springs of peace, and all the way to Zion their strength shall still increase. Scripture: Psalm 84 Used With Tune: ST. EDITH Text Sources: Psalter, 1912, alt.

Day by Day

Author: Carolina Sandell Berg; Andrew L. Skoog Meter: 10.9.10.9 D Appears in 59 hymnals Topics: Fear First Line: Day by day and with each passing moment Lyrics: 1 Day by day and with each passing moment, strength I find to meet my trials here; trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment, I’ve no cause for worry or for fear. He whose heart is kind beyond all measure gives unto each day what he deems best– lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure, mingling toil with peace and rest. 2 Every day the Lord himself is near me, with a special mercy for each hour; all my cares he gladly bears and cheers me, he whose name is Counselor and Power. The protection of his child and treasure is a charge that on himself he laid: “As your days, your strength shall be in measure”– this the pledge to me he made. 3 Help me then in every tribulation so to trust your promises, O Lord, that I lose not faith’s sweet consolation offered me within your holy Word. Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting, e'er to take, as from a father’s hand, one by one, the days, the moments fleeting, till I reach the promised land. Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:16 Used With Tune: BLOTT EN DAG

Fears removed--It is I, be not afraid

Appears in 20 hymnals Topics: Fear Removed by God's presence First Line: Unclean! unclean! and full of sin Lyrics: 1 Unclean! unclean! and full of sin, From first to last, alas, I've been! Deceitful is my heart: Guilt presses down my burden'd soul, But Jesus can the waves control, And bid my fears depart. 2 When first I heard his word of grace, Ungratefully I hid my face, Ungratefully delay'd: At length his voice more powerful came, " 'Tis I" he cry'd "I'm still the same, "Thou need's not be afraid." 3 My heart was chang'd--in that same hour My soul confess'd his mighty pow'r, I shed a grateful tear; Then listen'd still to hear his voice, Again he said, "in me rejoice, " 'Tis I, thou need's not fear." 4 "Unworthy of thy love," I cry'd, "Freely I love," he soon reply'd, "On me thy faith be staid; "On me for ever thing depend, "I'm Jesus still, the sinner's friend. "Thou need'st not be afraid." Scripture: John 6:20
