Violet Buchanan (Mrs. Andrew Sinclair Buchanan) who resides in London, England, is a new name in American hymnody, but not in British hymn circles. Two of her hymns appear in the new Anglican Hymn Book recently published: "O day of joy and wonder," a hymn for Pentecost, and "Help me dear Lord, to love thee more." Others of her hymns have been published, notably those for Christmas, Easter, and Whitsuntide. She has had requests for hymns on various subjects including recently "Animal Welfare" and "Safety on the roads." Both Mrs. Buchanan and her husband come of distinguished families. Her father, Sir Anderson Critchett was a noted physician, and members of her husband's family help important diplomatic posts. Mrs. Buchanan is active in her parish church and notes that she is a supporter of fellowship between all Christian denominations.

Murray, Robert. (Earltown, Nova Scotia, December 25, 1832--December 12, 1910, Halifax, N.S.). Presbyterian. Study at Halifax's Free Church College yielded him a licence to preach, but instead of seeking ordination he edited (1855-1910) his denomination's principal periodical in the Maritimes, Presbyterian Witness. In its pages, and from pulpits, he strongly supported controversial causes like temperance, Sunday observance, and the Confederation of 1867 (which in Halifax was greeting with a day of public mourning). These interests are reflected in his four hymns included in Canadian Presbyterians' first Hymnal (1880)--though, as the sole native-born contributor, he attached to them only the initial "M." to avoid giving the impression of claiming equality with poets of the homeland.

b. 1948 Author of "O Praise God's Name Together" in Psalms for All Seasons Michael Morgan (b. 1948) is a church musician, Psalm scholar, and collector of English Bibles and Psalters from Atlanta, Georgia. After almost 40 years, he now serves as Organist Emeritus for Atlanta’s historic Central Presbyterian Church, and as Seminary Musician at Columbia Theological Seminary. He holds degrees from Florida State University and Atlanta University, and did post-graduate study with composer Richard Purvis in San Francisco. He has played recitals, worship services, and master classes across the U. S., and in England, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany. He is author of the Psalter for Christian Worship (1999; rev. 2010), and a regular contributor in the field of psalmody (most recently to the Reformed collections Psalms for All Seasons and Lift Up Your Hearts, and the new Presbyterian hymnal, Glory to God).
