Song of Consolation

Author: Paul Gerhardt; John Kelly Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: Thou must not altogether be Lyrics: Thou must not altogether be O’ercome by sad vexation, God soon will cause to shine on thee The light of consolation. In patience wait, and be thou still, And let the Lord do what He will, He never can do evil. Is this the first time we have known And tasted sore affliction? What have we had but grief alone On earth, and sore dejection? We’ve had an ample share of grief, Yet God hath sometimes sent relief, A respite brief of gladness. Not so doth God our Father mean, When His afflictions grieve us, That no more shall His face be seen That He’ll for ever leave us; His purposes quite other are, That those who from Him wander far By trial be recover’d. It is our nature’s evil mood That when in joys we’re living, We then forsake our highest good, Ourselves to license giving. We earthly are, and deem more worth The things and pleasures of the earth, Than all that dwells in heaven. God therefore all our joys doth blight, Lets trials overtake us, Takes that wherein our hearts delight, Look up to Him to make us, That to His goodness and His pow’r, That we’ve neglected heretofore, We may return as children. When we return to Him again He graciously receives us, To joy He turns our every pain, To laughter turns what grieves us; To Him it is a simple art, He soon doth help to him impart Whom He with love embraceth. Afflicted band! oh, fall ye now With contrite hearts before Him, Tell Him that ye in homage bow To His great name; implore Him In grace your sins to take away, The load He on your backs did lay To bear, your wounds to bind up. Grace always before right must go, And wrath to love yield ever; His merest mercy, when we low Are lying, must deliver. His hand it is upholds us all, If we let go, then break and fall Must all our work to pieces. On God’s love must thou ever stay, Nor let aught overthrow thee, E’en when the heav’ns shall pass away And earth shall crash below thee: God promiseth His grace to thee, His word is clear, who fearlessly Trusts it, is ne’er deceivèd. So darest thou His pow’r so great Ne’er doubt a moment even, Who is it that doth all create,— By whom all gifts are given? God doth it, and His counsel wise Can ever ways and means devise, When every man despaireth. Seems help impossible to thee? This should’st thou know however, God by our narrow thoughts can be Hemm’d and confinèd never, This ne’er to us alloweth He; He everywhere,—His arm is free,— Doth more than we can fathom. What is His wide dominion fair? ’Tis full of varied wonder; He helpeth us when dark despair We helplessly sink under, To His great name this is the praise, If thou wilt see His holy place, Thou must ascribe for ever.

O Death, Where Is Thy Cruel Sting

Author: Justus Gesenius; Geo. Weissel Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 7 hymnals First Line: O death, where is thy cruel sting? Lyrics: 1 O death, where is thy cruel sting? O grave, where is thy power? What harm to us can Satan bring? Why need we fear or cower? All thanks to God who won the fight And saved us from our wretched plight Thro' Jesus Christ, our Savior. 2 How mightily the serpent strove When Christ with him contended! Thro' craftiness awhile he throve, But now his rule is ended. For tho' he bruised the Savior's heel, He yet no mortal thrust could deal; His head is bruised and trodden. 3 He lives, who by the foe was slain And held awhile in prison; His members now shall freedom gain, Since He, their Head, is risen. If heed unto His Word they give, Tho' they were dead, yet shall they live; Nor death nor grave an hold them. 4 If daily we with Christ arise Thro' faith and true repentance, Then may we calmly close our eyes And laugh to scorn death's sentence; For death is shorn of all its pow'rs, While peace and pardon now are ours, Eternal life and glory. 5 Behold the spoils that we possess, For which the Lord has striven: Forgiveness, peace and righteousness, Eternal life in heaven. So here we now with joy abide Till, in the body glorified, We dwell with Him forever. Topics: The Church Year Easter Used With Tune: DECIUS Text Sources: Tr. Composite

A tower of strength our God doth stand

Author: H. J. Buckoll; Marin Luther Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 4 hymnals Lyrics: 1 A tower of strength our God doth stand, A shield and sure defender: True help from all our woes, His hand Thro' life doth freely render. Our foe hath fixed his purpose fell, with might and craft he's arm'd full well, On earth is not his fellow. 2 With force of arms we nothing can: Full soon were we o'erridden: But for us fights the goodly man Whom God Himself hath bidden. Ask ye His Name? 'Tis Christ our Lord, The God of Hosts alone adored, Our Champion, none dare brave Him. 3 Should hell's whole legion round us press, All banded to devour us, Yet this should work us good success, Nor fear e'en then o'erpower us: Though this world's prince look fierce and bold, It maters not, his doom is told, A single word can foil him. 4 Our foes must let the Word stand sure; No thanks for this they're reaping; God's Spirit in His way secure, God's grace our souls is keeping; Those foes may spoil all earthly bliss; Let be! they win no gain from this, God's kingdom still is left us. Amen. Topics: Protection Used With Tune: EIN FESTE BURG

By Faith We Are Divinely Sure

Author: H. A. Brorson Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 5 hymnals Lyrics: 1 By faith we are divinely sure That grace to us is given. No human effort can secure This precious gift from heaven. 'Tis God Himself who must begin The blessed work of faith within And lead us to the Savior. 2 A wondrous blessing is our faith, It gives the peace we treasure, It comforts us in life and death And grants us joy's full measure. It helps us overcome our grief, And for our doubts we find relief By trusting in God's promise. 3 Though in a dark and fearsome hour My sins may sore accuse me, God shall sustain me by His power And not His grace refuse me. More than my sins His grace abounds, A truth that in His Word resounds For all repentant sinners. 4 The Word of God can never fail, It is the rock of ages When Satan doth my faith assail, Or doubt its battle wages. No more shall fear my soul enfold, Since I by faith God's grace behold, Which every fear can banish. 5 My faith shall keep in mind its goal And constantly endeavor To conquer what ensnares the soul And would from God me sever, While holding fast its gleaming shield, The Spirit's sword I too will wield, Until my foes are vanquished. 6 Now in this faith I will abide Until my days are ended. I will not fear what may betide, I am by faith defended. God's Word a token doth remain That in this faith I shall retain The promised crown and glory.
