Hark! Hark! The Notes of Joy

Author: Andrew Reed Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 95 hymnals First Line: Hark! hark!--the notes of joy Lyrics: 1. Hark! hark!—the notes of joy Roll o’er the heavenly plains, And seraphs find employ For their sublimest strains; Some new delight in Heaven is known, Loud sound the harps around the throne. 2. Hark! hark!—the sounds draw nigh, The joyful hosts descend; Jesus forsakes the sky, To earth His footsteps bend; He comes to bless our fallen race; He comes with messages of grace. 3. Bear, bear the tidings round; Let every mortal know What love in God is found, What pity He can show; Ye winds that blow! ye waves that roll! Bear the glad news from pole to pole. 4. Strike, strike the harps again, To great Immanuel’s name; Arise, ye sons of men! And all His grace proclaim; Angels and men! wake every string ’Tis God the Savior’s praise we sing. Hark! What Celestial Sounds

Author: L. V. Wheeler Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 55 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Hark! what celestial sounds What music fills the air! Soft warbling to the morn, It strikes the ravished ear: Now all is still; now wild it floats, In tuneful notes, loud, sweet and shrill. 2 Th’angelic hosts descend, With harmony divine: See how from Heaven they bend, And in full chorus join: Fear not, they say, Great joy we bring: Jesus, your king, is born today. 3 He comes, your souls to save From death’s eternal gloom; To realms of bliss and light He lifts you from the tomb: Your voices raise, with sons of light; Your songs unite of endless praise. 4 Glory to God on high! Ye mortals spread the sound, And let your raptures fly To earth’s remotest bound; For peace on earth, from God in Heaven, To man is given, at Jesus’ birth. Used With Tune: CHRISTMAS EVE Text Sources: Collection of Hymns for Public Worship, by Benjamin Williams et al. (Salisbury, England: 1788)

When Hannah, Pressed with Grief

Author: John Newton Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 43 hymnals Lyrics: 1. When Hannah, pressed with grief, Poured forth her soul in prayer; She quickly found relief, And left her burden there: Like her, in every trying case, Let us approach the throne of grace. 2. When she began to pray, Her heart was pained and sad; But ere she went away, Was comforted and glad: In trouble, what a resting place, Have they who know the throne of grace! 3. Though men and devils rage, And threaten to devour; The saints, from age to age, Are safe from all their power: Fresh strength they gain to run their race, By waiting at the throne of grace. 4. Eli her case mistook, How was her spirit moved By his unkind rebuke? But God her cause approved. We need not fear a creature’s face, While welcome at the throne of grace. 5. She was not filled with wine, As Eli rashly thought; But with a faith divine, And found the help she sought: Though men despise and call us base, Still let us ply the throne of grace. 6. Men have not power or skill, With troubled souls to bear; Though they express good-will, Poor comforters they are: But swelling sorrows sink apace, When we approach the throne of grace. 7. Numbers before have tried, And found the promise true; Nor one been yet denied, Then why should I or you? Let us by faith their footsteps trace, And hasten to the throne of grace. 8. As fogs obscure the light, And taint the morning air; But soon are put to flight, If the bright sun appear; Thus Jesus will our troubles chase, By shining from the throne of grace. Used With Tune: CONFIDENCE (Harmonia) Text Sources: Olney Hymns (London: W. Oliver, 1779), number 25
